‘LIFE’ and ‘The Rover’ on ION’s Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014 list
LIFE
Director: Anton Corbijn Writer: Luke Davies Producers: See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, First Generation Films’ Christina Piovesan U.S. Distributor: Rights Available Cast: Robert Pattinson, Dane DeHaan, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ben Kingsley
Art director/video filmmaker Anton Corbijn has been covering all the bases in his transition to feature filmmaking moving from gritty B&W arty biopic (Control) to Euro art-house hitman as a lone-wolf (The American) to spy thrillers (A Most Wanted Man – which ranks number #140 on our Most Anticipated list). While Control was a very personal project for the Dutchman, Life might actually be considered even closer to Corbijn’s background (the rock photographer turned filmmaker delves into the established rapport between the one behind the lenses and the subject). Robert Pattinson continues his on quest to work with “it” auteur directors while Dane DeHaan will attempt expand on what James Franco did back in 2001.
Gist: Inspired by the true story of a friendship that developed between Magnum photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and actor James Dean (DeHaan) when Stock was commissioned to photograph the actor for Life magazine in 1955. Stock was 26 and old before his time, when into his buttoned-down world came fledgling star James Dean, a free spirit who would change popular culture from suits to jeans and from matinee idols to teenage heartthrobs. The assignment, which took the pair on a photographic journey across the US, from LA to New York and on to Indiana would change Stock’s life and provide the world with some of the most iconic images of the age.
Release Date: Filming began last month and this will definitely be a prime item for Venice and TIFF film fests.
The Rover
Director: David Michôd Writer(s): David Michôd Producers: David Linde, David Michôd, Liz Watts U.S. Distributor: a24 Cast: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson
It’s hard to not overpraise David Michôd. After all, the Aussie filmmaker’s debut, a blistering ensemble film displayed a poised skillset that instantly placed the filmmaker in the big leagues. It appears that much of the make-up in Animal Kingdom’s (men, guns, revenge and death) are knocking down the door of this sophomore film. Re-teaming with Edgerton (story department) and Pearce, and a Robert Pattison who appears to be a bankable choice for auteur filmmakers, this looks like a throwback to golden Ozploitation nuggets of yesteryear.
Gist: This is about a loner who tracks the gang who stole his car from a desolate town in the Australian outback with the forced assistance of a wounded guy left behind in the wake of the theft.
Release Date: Clearly the film is ready and should score a Main Comp berth at this year’s Cannes. Look for the a24 folks to release this a la The Bling Ring, shortly after the fest premiere.
The Film: After wowing audiences with Animal Kingdom, Aussie director David Michôd returns with a violent Outback thriller set in the near future, in which Guy Pearce hunts down the criminals who stole his last possessions, aided by the injured gang member they left behind (Robert Pattinson, continuing his mission to move on from Edward Cullen).
If It Was Based On Something: If Young Ones has a Mad Max vibe, this one trumps it by being Australian.
Maps To The Stars
The Film: After a long period flirting with respectability, David Cronenberg seems to be back in touch with his inner weirdo, judging by his latest film – a satire about celebrity culture featuring drug-addicted child stars, ghostly visions and psychotherapy. Cosmopolis stars Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon are joined by Cronenberg newbies John Cusack, Julianne Moore and Mia Wasikowska.
If It Was Based On Something: Don’t be confused that screenwriter Bruce Wagner wrote a book, Dead Stars, with the same story – he wrote the screenplay first.
The Rover, Life, Maps to the Stars, Queen of the Desert, The Childhood of a Leader and Mission: Blacklist will be presented at the EFM, part of the Berlinale, which started yesterday and will continue until February 16.
The Rover is being named as ‘Upcoming’ and probably won’t be screened at the EFM.
Life is in the process of being financed according to the brochure, which you can find HERE
First teaser trailer for ‘The Rover’ starring Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce, written and directed by David Michôd
THE ROVER is set in a world ten years following the collapse of the western economic system, where Australia’s mineral resources have drawn the desperados and dangerous to its shores. With society in decline, the rule of law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Pearce), who travels the desolate towns and roads of the Australian outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind the wounded Rey (Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that matters to him.
