Fans of the Twilight franchise will get a chance to celebrate the release of Eclipse under the shadow of a real eclipse.
Looking to ramp up anticipation for the third instalment in the Stephenie Meyer vampire series, and thank the multitude of fans for their undying support of the undead, Summit Entertainment in the U.S. and Canada’s E1 entertainment are staging a series of free open-air screenings on Saturday.
The date marks the first lunar eclipse of the year, according to NASA, which estimates the Earth’s shadow will pass over the moon “east of the Lagoon Nebula” and be visible to most of the Americas, weather permitting.
“What are the odds that we’d be able to celebrate the release of Eclipse with a real eclipse?” said Charlene Coy, director of publicity for Toronto-based E1, Twilight’s Canadian distributor.
Though Eclipse will only hit theatres June 30, the free events will feature door prizes from the new movie, a “turn-yourself-into-a-vampire” booth and a free screening of the preceding chapter in the series, New Moon.
“The fans of Twilight have been so loyal, that we wanted to give them something back,” Coy said.
Coy said events are taking place all across North America, but only two Canadian cities — Toronto and Vancouver — will get the free party.
The Vancouver event will take place at Wolfson Field at UBC Thunderbird Park (doors open at 6 p.m. and the screening takes place at 9 p.m), while Toronto’s is located at Harbourfront Centre’s Sirius Stage (doors also open at 6 p.m. and the screening takes place at 9 p.m.).
