Sandra Bullock was by no means a budding starlet when she made her first big splash in Hollywood in 1993 with “Demolition Man.” The now 45-year-old actress constantly reinvented her image, from badass (1994’s “Speed”) to serious actress (1996’s “A Time To Kill”) to rom-com queen (2000’s “Miss Congeniality”) and now, with “The Blind Side,” to Oscar bait. But, as Sandra told Entertainment Weekly in their December 19 cover story, she is cautious of falling into the Hollywood trap.

“I’m not good at living in this industry,” she said. “I’m good working in it and appreciating it. But this town can swallow you up.”

Young Hollywood can learn a lesson or two from Sandra’s continued success. “You look at younger people in this business and you can literally see them being swallowed because everybody is making money off of them,” she said.

It’s easy to put names to those “younger people” with the insane success several franchises have had in the past few years. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson seem to be the two most swallowed by the business of movie-making with the insane success of “Twilight,” but Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens faced similar circumstances after the “High School Musical” Disney movies struck a chord with the tween demographic.

“Being a movie star is a joke; its all such a crapshoot. You just have to sit back and go (a) beyond your control, (b) good marketing, and (c) struck a weird chord,” is the advice Sandra gave. She added about her own strategy, “When I’m ready to open a script, I will, and if [the industry] is still ready for me, then great. But if they’re not, then fine. My to-do list is long.”

With Zac’s choice to drop out of “Footloose” and instead try something that will show of his acting ability with “Me and Orson Welles,” and Kristen and Rob both pursuing smaller, independent films, these young Hollywood actors look to be on the right track. But with Sandra well on her way to receiving her first Oscar nomination, it never hurts to look to your elders.

  1. look to your elders. that’s just wrong.

  2. Why is that wrong? Sandra is 45. Kristen is 19, Rob is 23. Sandy could play their Mom in a movie – actually I think that would be quite cool. I know Sandra loves Kristen, she said so at the MTV awards. I’d love to see them work together.
