Reviews For the New Water for Elephants Trailer   1 comment

As the majority of you know the new Water for Elephants trailer came out last night. Here are some reviews of the trailer. We’ll update this post as more come in so keep checking back!

From MTV:

I think I’m just going to come out and say it: Best. Second. Trailer. Ever.

There’s nothing more disappointing than looking forward to a new trailer for a highly anticipated release, only for it to be a cleverly re-packaged version of the first with nary a new scene in sight. Well, “Water for Elephants” director Francis Lawrence got it right with this one, because it almost felt like I was watching clips from an entirely different movie (in a totally good way).

Sure, Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz were all there just like before, but this second trailer revealed a whole new perspective of Sara Gruen’s best-selling novel that I totally enjoyed. Let’s count all the exciting new things after the jump!

1. Jacob Jankowski’s back story unfolds
Whereas the first trailer began with Jacob’s (Robert) arrival at the Benzini Brothers show, this one goes back even further to the events that led him to join the big top. We see the veterinary student sit for an exam until he’s interrupted by an official with tragic news—his parents were killed in a car accident. It’s then that Jacob drops out of school and hops a train bound for his destiny.

2. Marlena and Jacob kiss!
Commence the fits of fangirl giggles! It’s only a quick one- or two-second flash on screen, but we definitely spied a make out session between Reese’s Marlena and Jacob. We knew it would only be a matter of time before those longing glances from the initial trailer we’re fulfilled. (We just wish we had been on the receiving end instead of Reese!)

3. The tone is much darker
Kissing another man’s wife tends to have consequences, and for Jacob, it’s a beat-down from Marlena’s husband August (Christoph). It’s just one of several scenes—including the circus catastrophe hinted at in the first trailer—that gives this second trailer a decidedly darker tone. While the joy and whimsy of the circus—tinkly music and all—were the focus last time, the tension and conflict inside the tent take center stage now.

PopSugar:

The new trailer for Water For Elephants just hit, giving us a peek at some of the scenes that weren’t included in the original preview. For starters, it begins with Jacob’s (Robert Pattinson) life before the circus, explaining how he ended up as part of the Benzini Brothers. This trailer also has a more somber tone, showcasing August’s (Christoph Waltz) dark side and focusing on the love story between Jacob and Marlena (Reese Witherspoon). If these trailers are any indication, we’re in for a beautiful film adaptation of the best-selling novel.

Firstshowings.net:

“Love is worth the risk.” With a few weeks before opening, Amazon has debuted another full-length trailer for Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Water for Elephants, the circus drama starring Robert PattinsonReese WitherspoonChristoph WaltzJames FrainHal Holbrook (who isn’t in this trailer). We’ve seen at least two fantastic trailers before, but this one seems a bit more straightforward with the story from the book and spends a little more time focused on Pattinson and his character. I really can’t wait to see this, the way it builds is so epic. This trailer is a little spoilery in showing a lot of the film, but still looks great.

Hollywood News

“The handsome teaser shows “Twilight” heartthrob hopping a circus train toward his destiny, where he meets and falls in love with Reese Witherspoon (much to her husband, Christoph Waltz’s, chagrin). The trailer, which looks fantastic, sets the stage for a face off between Pattinson and Waltz for Witherspoon’s heart. It’s gorgeously mounted, with a classic “Old Hollywood” feel. The concept of forbidden romance might not be a stretch for Pattinson, coming off of his “Twilight” gig, but this one has moved near the top of our anxious-to-see list.”

Entertainment Weekly:

“I’d like to think whoever cut the new trailer for next month’s Water for Elephants is playing a cruel little game with us: They know some of us will start out drooling over the sight of Robert Pattinson in a suit … and then feel guilty when his character abruptly finds out that his parents have been killed in a car accident. Well done. You got us. The trailer below teases more of the love triangle that develops between Pattinson (a veterinary student in charge of caring for a traveling circus’ animals), Reese Witherspoon (the beautiful performer he falls for), and Christoph Waltz (Witherspoon’s husband, the troupe’s animal trainer), as well as the consequences. The music is different this time, but still pitch perfect. Hal Holbrook, who was the emotional center of the first trailer as Pattinson’s aged character recalling the story of “the most famous circus disaster of all time,” is absent, but it’s good to know the film packs a punch even without him. What do you think? “

  1. Loved the 1st and 4th reviews! 🙂 The 2nd and 3rd were … meh. In those, the reviewers didn’t give their opinions on it. #fail
