Discussion: What Are Your Thoughts On The Bel Ami Issue?   55 comments

As most of you know Bel Ami is a novel written by Maupassant which revolves around the world of Georges Duroy, a character who uses sex and women to gain power, influence and money. However as we’ve heard earlier the studio is worried about marketing the movie as Rob plays a cad in the movie.

We’ve been seeing your messages on the site and on Facebook and we hear you loud and clear. We thought we’d give you guys a place to discuss the subject. What are your thoughts on the matter?

  1. No, I don’t want them to change anything! I loved the book and yes Georges is a scoundrel, a man-whore (like Rob said), so what?! That’s what he is in the book and that’s what he should be in the movie. It’s such a great opportunity for Rob to show that he can be a bad guy too. I’m sure he’s a great Georges and even if he’s very bad, we are going to love him anyway.

  2. Rob has the right to develop his career. Is not Edward Cullen and Duroy not think it’s wrong. Teenage girls are interested only in Twilight, adults want to him see in mature roles… I want to see this movie

  3. I think this is extremely stupid. Rob’s fans don’t love him just because he usually places the nice guy in movies. We love him because he’s a great actor.

This is a new role for him. He hasn’t done a bad guy before. Just release the movie and let us judge for ourselves. The reason this movie has gotten the attention it has so far is mostly because he’s in it. That’s why i’m going to watch. I just hope the movie doesn’t suck because they edit it so much that it destroys the storyline. I’ve read Bel Ami several times and have always enjoyed it. If it doesn’t get the publicity it wants its because of things like this.

  4. Most of his diehard fans have read the book, so they know what to expect. They should just release the movie, already. It’s been over a year, and we’re all waiting and waiting for it!

  5. I say stop cutting & editing it & leave it as close to the book as possible! It was filmed the fans know what to expect so release it already!

  6. Making the movie into something the book isn’t is simply beyond wrong. We expect him to play the bad guy, we want him to play the bad guy, cos that’s how he is in the book. We want the real thing. Please don’t edit Bel Ami into a refrigerator magnet!!!!

  7. wish they didn’t make such an issue about that. Rob is only playing the bad caracter and don’t let us forget, he is an actor. It is not Rob who is bad, it’s Georges. So please give us the movie. Rob is a great actor and we will love him even when he plays the bad guy. I’ve read the book and I liked it.

  8. I think it is a great disservice to the director, cast and crew of a movie to have to make changes due to the fact that another studio is worried about how the main character will be received by THEIR audience and not the actual audience of said movie!! If I am not mistaken, isn’t Bel Ami supposed to be rated R anyway?! Which means 17 years and older!! If the delay of the release of BA is really because of Summit’s fear of how “Edward Cullen” is perceived by the under 17 set then that is so wrong. I still can’t figure out how Summit truly believes that the majority of the Twi fans are still 12 and 13!! How and why was The Runaways or Welcome to the Rileys released mid-Twi hype with Kristen Stewart playing “not so innocent” characters?! I truly hope that Bel Ami is released soon and kept in it’s original form without unnecessary edits. I think we are aware that Georges DuRoy is just a character that Robert Pattinson is portraying just like we know Edward Cullen is not real, but a character he portrays. Although Summit would love for us to believe otherwise. Final thought…do not hinder the creative processes for the viewing public for the sake of your pocket book! The movie going audience is intelligent, passionate and dedicated and no matter what character Rob is portraying, the fans will come…in droves!!

  9. Now they’re worried!? Helloooooooo~they new what the book was about, they read the script ! I don’t understand the studio’s worries.. Rob’s an actor nd a Damn GOOD one Georges Duroy is his character not Rob himself. give Bel Ami an R rating nd let it fly!To the Studio…: Put ur worries up on a shelf and market the damn thing! U know ur gonna do it quit makin us wait~

  10. I still don’t know what attracted Rob to this particular project. Don’t get me wrong, I support him 100%.

I just don’t get it. I didn’t like the book, nor the script… And is clear that the studio, or whoever is behind it is worried about how the audience is going to react. So, I don’t know, why they made it anyway?

  11. An adult won’t have difficulties with the role. Let Mr Pattinson spread his wings to display his talents. I, for one, don’t believe that playing a cad on screen makes him a cad in real life.

Let the man do his work and then judge the results!

  12. Bring on ‘Bel Ami’ I read the book and want to see the movie…. Let’s do it…come on fans let’s bring this baby home!!!

  13. I totally agree with all the comments posted so far! We want Rob to play the best Georges from the book he can! It is really stupid to worry about how fans would take Rob as a bad character! He is an actor and it is so unfair to the book and other actors in the movie to even worry about issues like that. Leave the movie alone, keep it close to what you planned and just GIVE US THE MOVIE!!! We are waiting for it already so long!!!!

  14. I hope the powers that be stop with this silliness and stay true to the vision of the book and release a movie (soon) that shows DuRoy to be the cad he is and not try to edit it down. As others have already commented, he is an actor; let him do his job; his fans want to see him in all types of roles. I hope this isn’t one of those movies Rob was talking about where they take something that probably should be rated R and try to edit it to PG-13 thinking they will get a bigger audience – that would be a real shame.

  15. Come on, studio execs, Rob’s an ADULT, and his ADULT fans want to see him in ADULT roles. Don’t screw this up. If they decide to edit BA down to a PG-13 level, they’re gonna lose a lot of the potential adult viewers, plus the critics will lambaste Rob again like they did on Remember Me. Give him a chance to show what he can do. Stay true to the story and release the dang movie as the story is written!!! I can’t wait to see Rob play a s***!

  16. I don’t want them to change anything. The book is perfect as it is! And people have to get used to the idea that Robert Pattinson is an actor. A good one! He is not Edward Cullen. For God’s sake, let the movie as it is.

  17. What’s the issue?! I totally missed that part..

    • Okay never mind. Maybe I should read all the posts I missed next time before asking stupid questions..

But seriously why can’t he just play a total and complete bastard?! Isn’t that what acting is all about. Playing good and bad people. It’s not like he IS George duRoy..

I liked the book and well yes, he did some not so nice things. but then again it is, probably, how things went back then..

  18. I really want to see movie,so release it already and stay true to the book!:)It`s total opposite to everything he`s done so far.He can`t stay PG13 forever, well I don`t want him to be PG13..If movie is good then it will get big audience no matter what..

  19. The whole affair seems quite ridiculous to me. What are they going to do? Force him just to do projects which fit into the Edward-chliché? He can´t get away from that if he doesn´t get the chance to work on projects which are totally different….

  20. Is the problem that they can’t find a distributor? Is it that the distributor thinks that if the film maker makes changes to make it more like Twilight then they’d be guaranteed Millions?

This is a movie based on a book, with MANY talented people in it, so again, is it greed that is the true issue? Why make changes from the original vision and/or book? Seems to me letting it sit=NO MONEY! There are plenty of people across this world that can make a decision to go and see this movie……trying to tone it down or make it more Edward Cullen is absolutely idiotic! Is this the kind of stuff that happens on all independent films? If so, why do actors even bother to ACT in them…..

  21. Don’t change a thing about this character. Georges is who he is and anything less would definitely take away from the production. Just the premise alone makes this movie unsuitable for PG-13. The story line can’t change that much.
The powers that be, unfortunately, will do what they want to do anyway….they usually are excellent at ruining a good thing.

  22. Love the book and heard the movie is close to book, which I also love. Just release it the way it is, Rob wouldn’t of done it if he thought it would of harmed him professional, he’s not stupid.

  23. The whole thing is silly! Just put the movie out already. I can’t believe they are worried about Rob playing a “bad” guy. Do they really think it is going to make us like him less??? It is called ACTING!

  24. Ridiculous. Just release the damn thing!

  25. For God sake! Let the man play a cad! What’s the problem??? We know he’s a great guy in real-ilfe. He would just be playing a role in a movie – that’s why they call it “acting”.

  26. I HOPE THEY SEE THESE COMMENTS. ROB FANS KNOW HIM, AND KNOW HE IS ACTING. I AGREE WITH ALL THE COMMENTS. R O B IS N O T EDWARD!

  27. I am a big Rob Pattinson fan, and I have been looking forward to seeing BelAmi. A good actor plays different types of roles, and I would love to see this movie.

  28. I had posted this on a BA site but worth repeating here.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there is at least one person with “power” relating to the proper marketing of BA. Can’t help but think of how RM was marketed … trying to attract young Twi fans. #fail It is the more mature adults … mostly women … that made RM a decent success despite bad marketing.

To the BA directors/producers “Stick to your work values! Remember why you made BA in the first place! You need to face the facts … BA will attract a specific demographic group who enjoy period movies … not teens … so don’t even try it … you will fail.”

    • DITTO! I cant understand that they are worried about Rob playing a cad, well, Georges Duroy IS a cad, dont edits the classics and let the guy work!

  29. I’ve read the book. I heard BA is true to the book. If you like the book, go see it. If you don’t like the book, then don’t go see it. I personally didn’t like the book, but then again it is just my opinion. Fans will go see it because Rob is in it….I hope it is a success. 🙂

  30. I am not sure what all the fuss is about, Rob is an actor and he is doing what he gets paid to do. They knew what the story was about when they filmed it, Rob read the script and agreed to the role. And now they are concerned?? Personally I want to see Bel Ami, I want o see Rob act.

  31. De acuerdo en todo, Rob es un actor, he leido el libro y quiero ver la película y ver a Robert en otros registros diferentes, no creo que deban preocuparse de nada.

  32. I haven’t read the book but that doesn’t matter to me because I still want to see the movie. I want to see anything Rob does no matter what kind of character he’s playing. The fact that he’s playing a bad character actually makes me want to see it even more. Seeing him play a bad character certainly isn’t going to change the way I feel about him. He’s an absolutely wonderful actor and the studio needs to get off their butts and release it already. We’ve been waiting long enough!!!

  33. If its true BA is trying to cut this film to make Rob be such a villain then all I can say is STOP. Let him be the villain George DuRoy is. I can deal with the character. Let Rob expand himself and prove what an actor he really is. This is not Twilight BA people. I want to see the villian.

  34. I think you’ve all hot the nail on the head with these comments. It’s insulting to the entire cast and crew who went into this project because they were drawn to the story to have thier work edited into something it was never meant to be to please a certain demographic. The studio saw the script, knew the story, and knew what they were getting into with this film. The CAST, specifically Rob, knew what this story was about. How dare they try to turn it into something it’s not. I’ve seen plenty of actors I’ve admired play characters that I didn’t particularly like, but still found their work compelling. Is Rob not deserving of the same opportunities to develop and showcase his talentts because a group of younger people can’t then go see it? Does he need to be Edward Cullen in every way…frozen forever as a 17 year old virginal vampire? I just don’t understand the hullaballoo over this. Unless what we’re seeing is some REALLY CLEVER MARKETING where they allow the film to be what it should be and say that it was done this way because the PUBLIC DEMANDED IT!

  35. We’re not stupid or illiterate, we have read the book (I have) or know the story!! We are looking forward to seeing the film as set out in the book!! If Rob plays a less than savoury character so what! He’s an actor! He’s supposed to be able to play many different parts! Be they good people or bad!! Let him act, he’s a good actor and deserves to be shown as such!! Xx

  36. I’m loving all the reactions we get on here. And I agree: Rob should be able to play any part he likes. It won’t destroy his career when he does movies ‘outside his profile’. On the contrary: I seriously think it will do his career good. Look at Johnny Depp: he was the heartthrob of 21JumpStreet, didn’t want to be that and played movies he really liked. Not going for his looks but his acting abilities. And he’s still loved and respected. So go for it Rob: play the parts you want to play 🙂

  37. It will be worse for Rob’s career if they change his character in the movie to be likable. They are forcing him to be type-cast against his wishes and it’s not fair.

  38. I say let’s see what Rob can do, uncut, badass, down and dirty hot sex. NOW PLEASE. Anyone who can’t handle it shouldn’t go and see it.

  39. I had left my thoughts on this subject on the post previous to this one yesterday, but I think it bears repeating.

“I am very disappointed that the release of this movie keeps getting delayed and that there still isn’t a US distributor for it. I don’t know why they are worried. People need to stop pigeon-holing Rob into one target audience. When will the powers-that-be comprehend that not all his fans are teenagers?? The teenagers and teens only seem loyal to the Twilight Saga anyway, most of them are not loyal to Rob, which makes me very sad.

Let’s hope that Water for Elephants will finally get people outside the fandom to appreciate Rob’s talent, and then maybe the makers of Bel Ami will see that a non-Twilight movie starring Rob can be successful. Little Ashes was rated R, too, and he was fantastic in that. Bel Ami should definitely be rated R – please let us grown ups enjoy Rob in a grown up role. Does this mean that Cosmopolis will have a problem, too? Ridiculous!”

    • Very well said Maria……………I mean Little Ashes wasnt a big film but it made it out there regardless. So I hope dat Bel Ami gets the recognition it deserves, i mean its really a great story. And right u are also wen u say dat ppl need 2 b more loyal to Rob as opposed 2 Edward…….it very immature. *I’m TEAM EDWARD btw* real Rob fans will recognise his Pre & Post Twilight Careers…..he’s been in sum great movies and also has gr8 musical talents. He’s truly talented and Twilight is jus a very small % of wat he really has 2 offer

  40. I really want to see that movie!especially since it was filmed in my hometown:D
the book is great, and as someone had already said it,people know what to expect.

  41. Don’t type-cast Rob! Let him define his career, not Twilight. I’m a huge fan of Twilight, but a bigger fan of Rob. I want to see this movie! The sooner, the better.

  42. I think that the whole thing is just soooooooooooooooo ridiculous! 1. Rob is an ACTOR, so they should just let him do his job! 2. Guy de Maupassant is a classic and it would be insulting to him to change the whole point of his work! 3. Rob is Rob and not Edward, who isn’t able to make that distinction between reality and fiction should probably stop watching movies at all! 4. It is an insult to all the people who put a lot of work into this movie! 5. In 2011 a few sex scenes and actors who play the role of the bad guy reaching what he wants through affairs shouldn’t be such a big deal anymore! … etc. I could go on like that for hours. The point is: Just let the movie like it is and let the fans see the movie!!! Sorry if there are mistakes in my post I’m from Austria!

  43. I think that it is good for Rob to expand and play as many different characters that he wants. He doesn’t want to be always known as Edward Cullen. So what if he plays a cad in this film. His fans will still stick with him regardless. As an actor you have to try different characters and genre. Its great that he is getting the recognition that he so rightly deserves. I still want to see Bel Ami and I have also read the book. I am sure he will do justice to the character.

  44. I’m hoping they’ll go with the original story, bad Georges, nudity and peculiar ending and all that goes with Bel Ami. That’s the story, what deMausppaunt and the filmmakers wanted. Stranger stories have been made into successful movies. My opinion is: take the “R” rating, promote the movie in the right way, making sure it’s clear that it is “mature” subject matter, and get the movie out there–it’s just a movie, don’t be intemidated!

..and the fear of Summit? I don’t think Summit and their precious franchise have anything to do with this. I could be wrong, but I think it’s the greed of these filmmakers, producers, distributors that’s holding things up…and if they stall it too long we’ll all end up with a straight to DVD movie…and, although we would finally get to see it, it would be a shame for Rob and for the moviegoers not to get to see it as it was intended–on the big screen.

  45. I cudnt agree more…………Rob iz soooooo much more than Twilight as most ppl seem to see. I hav been greatful evn to see him in such small critical roles like The Bad Mother’s Handbook and How to Be. Remember Me also was absolutely AMAZING and i really look 4ward 2 see where his career is headed Post-Twilight!!!! He’s amazingly talented and I look 4ward 2 watchin dis twist of events in Bel-Ami!!!!! A very different role but rrole/ character versatility is an extremely crucial attribute of a truly talented actor *which i have no doubt that he is* BRING ON BADASS GEORGES!!! heheeeee

  46. It’s not the cad Georges the distributors are afraid of
it’s the sexual content and maybe the type of nudity.
If they want a limited showing then they probably
need to keep it the way it is and it gets limited
viewing with a R or worse rating. Want a wider audience
that perhaps introduces younger audiences to
classic books then maybe they need to refine the way
    they tell the story.

  47. Rob is much more than a vampire. Anyone see Remember Me? He was great. I personally would love to see him as the bad guy. After all, its only a character.

  48. HAVEN’T READ HE BOOK. HAVE WATCHED EVERY SINGLE SECOND ROB HAS BEEN ON FILM. PRICELESS!!! GUY DE MAUPASSANT WAS A GREAT AUTHOR SHOW SOME RESPECT. ALL PEOPLE WHO WORKED THEIR HEARTS OUT TO MAKE THIS FILM SHOULD BE RESPECTED ALSO. IT’S HYPOCRITICAL ABD RIDICULOUS TO CHANGE THE FILM. RELEASE IT AS IS. RIGHT NOW!!! I PERSONALLY PREFER ROB ACTING IN ANYTHING ELSE THAN TWILIGHT, THOUGH THE FIRST ONE WAS GREAT (FIRST APPROACH TO THE ROLE, BRILLIANT). TO SUMMIT : AREN’T YOU SATISFIED WITH ALL THOSE BILLIONS, GAZILLIONS, YOU ALREADY HAVE? DO SOMETHING FOR ART’S SAKE FOR ONCE. WHO KNOWS… MAYBE YOU’LL MAKE MORE MILLIONS FOR YOURSELVES. LET ROB BE WHAT HE REALLY IS. AN ACTOR! A GREAT ARTIST!!!

  49. Do you remeber an 80’s ilm called “SEX, LIES and VIDEOTAPE”? It cost less than 2 million $ and proved to be the biggest film in the year it was released. Great film, sex scenes included… (If you haven’t, you should). Sonderberg was it’s director. Do you remember a film called “REMEMBER ME”? It cost 16 million and collected more than 70 million! That’s for starters… Now a question : Did time stop? Are we in the Twilight Zone? Is ROB still 17? I thought he’s going to be 25 next month… Is it necessary to find us a vampire to kill Edward in order to let Rob act? I don’t think so. Because Edward is a ROLE!!! After all who wants to be with a non existent man? Rob,is wisely choosing completely different characters in each film he makes. He is an artist and real artists are never static. The rest is B……T !!! RELEASE THE FILM NOW! LET US DECIDE!!! WE PROVIDE YOU THE MONEY. Children can always watch something else. NONE of ROB’S TRUE FAN will turn their backs on him, simply because he’s an EXCEPTIONAL ACTOR!!!

  50. If there wasn’t any evil, how were we supposed to tell right from wrong? Guy de Mauppasant’s book gives a perfect opportunity to find out for ourselves a group of people who are the majority of today’s world I’m afraid. As far as R scenes are concerned, are there many parents who believe that their young sprouts have never ever taken a glimpse of sex in the Internet? Who are we trying to foul with this lie? Rob makes wonderful film choices, evolving his potentials, which are already close to perfect, inviting us to follow his steps, in this world of experience, in his own special way. It’shis own way to thank us for being fans of his art. If the film sticks to the book, it’s more than perfect to us. Please release “BEL AMI”, with no further delay.

  51. Lot of people and not only teen want to see Bel ami, let us see ROBERT as Duroy, as it is, He is a great actor.
