If you ask us, Robert Pattinson officially arrived in Hollywood when “Twilight” won five Golden Popcorn statues at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards — including RPattz’s nods for Best Kiss, Best Fight and Breakthrough Male Performance. But others might argue his Tinseltown coming-out party occurred a few months earlier.
In late February ’09, after a weeklong series of rumors had whipped the Twi-nation into a frenzy, Pattinson walked onto an Academy Awards red carpet for the first time. He was not there because he was nominated, but simply because the Academy could not ignore the vampire phenomenon that had ignited the box office — and too many tween hearts to count — the previous fall. It was the biggest night in Hollywood, after all, and its biggest new star just had to be there. Not that he could quite wrap his head around the idea.
“It’s insane,” Pattinson exclaimed when we caught up with him on the carpet. “When they first told me about this, I was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, you’re joking’ — or ‘I’m going to have to do something really stupid like get gunged!’ “
Assuming he’d need to get doused with slime to justify an Oscars appearance, for that reason alone, this awards-season moment deserves to make our countdown of favorite Pattinson moments before the debut of “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” at 8:56 p.m. ET on Friday. But RPattz’s self-deprecating humor aside, it was at the Oscars that his status as the rising young actor in town was solidified.
During the ceremony, he took the stage alongside Amanda Seyfried to present a montage of the year’s romantic films, everything from “Mamma Mia!” to “Revolutionary Road” to, yes, “Twilight.” Yet even though footage from the film that made him a star played at the Oscars, he couldn’t quite believe the situation.
“I’m so surprised that it worked out the way it did,” he told us of becoming a crush-worthy Hollywood presence. “I was thinking the whole time, ‘I don’t really have the personality to fit into that.’ I’m not really afraid of it. I don’t even know how to play up that. I don’t know if I could ever be cast in a heartthrob role, apart from ‘Twilight,’ which I didn’t know was a heartthrob role.”

Hal Holbrook recently spoke to SignOnSanDiego.com about meeting Rob for the first time.
And while Holbrook is constantly looking to the past to inform the future, the “Wall Street” actor still has some interesting run-ins with Hollywood up-and-comers. On the set of his upcoming movie, “Water for Elephants,” Holbrook worked alongside everyone’s favorite vampire — teenage heartthrob Robert Pattinson (of the “Twilight” series).
“I was astonished when I met him, because I met him with a couple friends of mine and the minute I looked at him, I said to him, ‘My God, you look like me as a young man,’” Holbrook said. “Everyone who was with me said, ‘Yeah, he really does.’”

Recently, artist Richard Phillips decided to paint some of the brightest young Hollywood stars for his “Most Wanted” Exhibit at the White Cube Gallery in London. The exhibition featured Phillips’ take on stars like Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Dakota Fanning, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kristen Stewart and, yes, even Robert Pattinson and that famous head of hair.
The show may have wrapped up a few weeks back, but in anticipation of “MTV First: Robert Pattinson,” we wanted to bring you all the best bites from our interview with the artist, who dished about what makes Robert Pattinson one of the “Most Wanted” in Hollywood.
“I think that the greatest pressure for me was getting Robert Pattinson’s expression right because he is…certainly Leo is important in terms of his character and the gravitas he has, but with Robert it’s that kind of knowing smirk or that sexy look in his masculine, yet feminine qualities that people die for that’s a hard thing to grab,” Phillips explained of painting the “Twilight” hottie and wanting to get it just right. “You’ve got all of those components and in a painting how do you bring it together, that’s the thing that becomes the question and I had to answer that in paint.”
Phillips did find the way to make it work, he explained, “One thing that I will say is that having the highlight in his one eye and no highlight in the other eye gives him that knowing look. Like in one eye he already knows you; in the other eye he’s addressing you,” he said. “There’s tricks within the portrait, the little curve outside his mouth, those are the things that bring out his character…that and his tousled hair.”
