For those of you who don’t get how David Cronenberg would want to work with Robert Pattinson, just look at Breaking Dawn. If Bella’s pregnancy doesn’t count as a prime example of Cronenbergian body horror, then I don’t know what does. And now, it appears that Pattinson and Cronenberg are hoping to pair up once more following their upcoming Cosmopolis. Pattinson confirmed to EW that he’s attached to the director’s long-gestating Maps to the Stars — although he’s not sure when they would begin production. “I don’t know if I’m doing it next,” he says. Cronenberg has stated that he hopes to cast frequent collaborator Viggo Mortensen as well.
The film would be based on a script by novelist and screenwriter Bruce Wagner, who has also written an adaptation of Jonathan Lethem’s novel, As She Climbed Across the Table, for Cronenberg. “It’s about child stars,” says Pattinson of Wagner’s script. “It’s very funny. It’s very, very dark.”
Cosmopolis, which is based on a 2003 Don DeLillo novel, debuted two weeks ago at the Cannes Film Festival.

The British actor Pattinson looks set to become the renowned sci-fi horror director’s new muse. Playing the financial genius Eric Packer – who heads across New York in a white limousine in search of a hair cut – he appears in every scene of Cronenberg’s new film Cosmopolis, which competed for the Palme D’or at the years Cannes Film Festival and opens in UK cinemas June 15.
Cronenberg today described the star of the Twilight franchise as “a beautiful actor who often responds to scenes without even realising what he’s doing. That’s why I love him.”
Pattinson will perform opposite Viggo Mortensen, best known for his role as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings franchise, who starred in Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. The two are regarded as creative partners.
Speaking in London today, the Canadian director of The Fly, Scanners and eXistenz said: “There’s a brilliant script by an author friend of mine called Bruce Wagner. All of his books are fantastic. I tried to get this script off the ground five years ago, but I couldn’t get it made. In a way its like Cosmopolis; it’s a difficult sell. It’s edgy in a nasty, disturbing way. It has emotion, but it has a weird emotion like Cosmopolis.
“It’s hard to make difficult movies. When you have very credible actors who bring a lot of attention like Viggo Mortensen and Robert Pattinson, you think it would be easy to raise 15 million dollars, but it’s not.”

And evidently the Cronenberg/Pattinson collaboration has been a mutually beneficial experience as the director and 26-year-old actor are hoping to reteam on Cronenberg’s next effort. Titled “Map To The Stars,” Cronenberg confirmed to Playlist contributor Aaron Hillis in Cannes that he and Pattinson were hoping to make this their next picture. And the director also revealed that one of his regulars hopes to be on board as well.
“I asked Rob if he would be interested in playing a particular role in it and he said yes, he would. Likewise, Viggo [Mortensen] is interested in a role,” Cronenberg said. “It would be very interesting. This is a project called ‘Map To The Stars’ written by Bruce Wagner who is a wonderful L.A. screenwriter.”
Wagner also wrote an adaptation of “As She Climbed Across the Table,” a Jonathan Lethem novel that Cronenberg hopes to make one day for Steven Zaillian’s Film Rites shingle. As for ‘Maps,’ it’s a movie Cronenberg tried to make five years ago, but the financing fell through. And the director cautions that the new iteration of this project also has yet to be sewn up financially.

The ubiquitous “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson is doing everything he can to not be described as “‘Twilight’ star Pattinson”, and if it takes attaching himself to every upcoming David Cronenberg project to do so, by God he will follow through.
Pattinson has just become attached as a supporting actor in director Cronenberg’s upcoming darkly comedic drama, MAPS TO THE STARS. The pic, to which Viggo Mortensen is already attached, details the story of two child actors ruined by Hollywood’s depravity. Pattinson is said to play Jerome, a chauffeur by day and struggling actor by night. Scribe Bruce Wagner, who was originally set to direct until Cronenberg took the reigns in 2006, penned the script.
This news comes just before the May release of the anticipated Cronenberg project starring Pattinson, “Cosmopolis”, based on the Don DeLillo novel of the same name. Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a young billionaire who attempts to visit his father’s barber across Manhattan but is thwarted by a series of unlikely events.
“Maps to the Stars” will also be Mortensen’s fourth project with Cronenberg, having first worked together when he took the lead in “A History of Violence”.
Pattinson is currently in active development on “Unbound Captives”, a period drama that will also star Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.
