Robert Pattinson talks Cosmopolis and competing with On The Road in Cannes   Leave a comment

Robert Pattinson, 26, stars as a Wall Street banker in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, shot primarily in the back of his character’s giant white limousine — where Pattinson’s banker has a tryst with 48-year-old French actress Juliette Binoche. Pattinson then does Efron one better.

“There’s a scene where I’m seducing (another woman) naked, while having a prostate exam in the back of a limousine. People don’t really see that very often in movies,” Pattinson says with a laugh. “You do what you can to surprise people.”

The red carpet lineup also will feature Twilight’s golden couple, Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. This time they are going head-to-head, with Stewart starring in the competition film On the Road.

“I’m already making excuses,” Pattinson jokes about their friendly festival competition.

But for these two weeks, it’s not all about winning the contest, but enjoying the glitz in the South of France.

“There is really something glamorous about Cannes,” Pattinson says.”It’s the bow ties and the way the festival holds onto the glamour. People really make an effort.”

ETA: New Article added – Rob talks about Cannes and Cosmopolis

Whereas Penn and Pitt are familiar favorites at Cannes, this year’s festival includes a new crop of young actors seeking more adventurous work, including LaBeouf, Efron and Pattinson.

“When you fantasize about how the world views you as an actor, you’re like, ‘I want to be recognized at Cannes,'” says Pattinson, who has drawn high compliments from his director, Cronenberg, for his performance in “Cosmopolis.”

Pattinson has previously been to Cannes to promote the “Twilight” film “New Moon” in 2009, but he’s clearly thrilled to be a part of the main slate.

“Hopefully, people don’t hate it,” he says, alluding to Cannes’ famously vocal audiences.

Cosmopolis featured in London Evening Standard’s Yes we Cannes: British talent takes a starring role   2 comments

From London Evening Standard:

Yes we Cannes: British talent takes a starring role

Film festivals, like the Olympics, tend to arouse partisan feelings. And patriotic Brits can already count this year’s Cannes, which begins next week, a success. True, only one UK film is actually in the running for a prize. On the other hand, three British movies will be shown at special screenings and a high proportion of the festival’s must-see films place British actors centre stage.

Cosmopolis:

Robert Pattinson, probably the most famous cutie on the planet thanks to the Twilight vampire franchise, is about to become noteworthy in an entirely new way thanks to Cronenberg’s Palme d’Or contender. An adaptation of Don DeLillo’s dystopian novel, this entry from the Canadian auteur sees Pattinson as a bored, petulant, limousine-loving billionaire, gliding through Manhattan in search of kicks and a haircut. Sex. Violence. Horror (the rat is a unit of currency in this un-brave new world). If Pattinson can hold his own alongside edgy talents like Samantha Morton, he’ll not only impress art-house audiences but prove that his charisma has real bite.

Cosmopolis featured on The Playlist’s 15 Most Anticipated Films Of The Cannes Film Festival   Leave a comment

From The Playlist:

“Cosmopolis”  – dir. David Cronenberg – France/Germany/Canada
Synopsis: Based on the novel by American authorDon DeLillo, this centers on Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson), a young multi-billionaire making an epic, ultimately doomed limo ride across New York City.
What You Need to Know: At the outset, “Cosmopolis” seems to fall in line with the mannered, critic-friendly films of the recent Cronenberg era. It is, after all, an adaptation of a critically revered and best-selling novel and stars hunky heartthrob-of-the-moment Robert Pattinson. But having seen those first few trailers, the movie seems more atypical and dangerous (a good thing, since “A Dangerous Method” felt far too safe for a filmmaker known for exploding heads and genital mutilation), and certainly a return to a more recognizable kind of picture for the director with a number of Cronenberg’s favorite thematic tics look to be explored, including man’s relationship with modern technology, the messiness of murder, and sexual obsession. The big question is whether “Twilight” star Pattinson can pull off that lead role. His starring efforts outside the vampire franchise, like “Water For Elephants” and “Bel Ami,” have mostly been met by shrugs, but we’re impressed with what we’ve seen of him here, and if he ever wins over his doubters, it’ll be on this one. He’s got a strong supporting cast behind him which’ll help, with Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel, Sarah Gadon and Mathieu Amalric along for the ride.

HitFix Talks Cosmopolis and Cannes Buzz   Leave a comment

From HitFix/Guy Lodge:

Cannes Check: David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’
Continuing our series of Cannes competition previews

The auteur: David Cronenberg (Canadian, 69 years old)

The talent: At this stage in his career, we don’t expect an undistinguished cast from a Cronenberg film, and true to form, this one is packed to the rafters with interesting names — though not ones you’d necessarily expect on one bill. Juliette Binoche (returning to Cannes for the first time since winning Best Actress two years ago), Samantha Morton, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Amalric and Jay Baruchel are all on board — as, more improbably, is Somalian rapper K’Naan. (On a side note, this is the director’s first feature in 10 years not to star Viggo Mortensen.)

The big attraction, however, is some guy called Robert Pattinson in the lead. It’s perhaps the poppiest casting coup of Cronenberg’s career, and the best chance yet for the talented British heartthrob to win some admirers beyond the fiercely devoted “Twilight” faithful.
A major point of interest is that this is Cronenberg’s first self-scripted feature since 1999’s “eXistenZ,” which rather increases the possibility of the director letting his freak flag fly. Below the line, meanwhile, it’s business as usual: cinematographer Peter Suschitzky has shot all Cronenberg’s films since “Dead Ringers” in 1998, composer Howard Shore has scored all but one since “The Brood” in 1979, while editor Ronald Sanders and costume designer (and sister) Denise Cronenberg go similarly far back. This sturdy team is just about as integral to the Cronenberg brand as Cronenberg himself.

….

The buzz: Through. The. Roof. Casting Pattinson in the lead has ensured that, in an unusual occurrence, the arthouse intelligentsia and the screaming teen hordes are going to converge on the same red carpet, making “Cosmopolis” surely the hottest ticket of the festival. What that means for the film itself is harder to gauge. With the festival’s flashbulbs fixed squarely on it, the film’s under pressure to deliver — but it’s likelier to satisfy, or at least stimulate, the Cronenberg acolytes than the mainstream media drawn more by the casting than the challenging match of director and source material. Mixed reviews wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing: it could be one of those strange festival brews for which critical consensus is slow to emerge.

The odds: The bookies like the film’s Palme chances — Paddy Power currently gives it strong odds of 11-2 — but in this case, I don’t think they’re necessarily being deceived by the bright lights. Cronenberg is well overdue for some major festival hardware, and the film’s themes would make it an attractively timely winner. I have my doubts about the Palme going to a big-name North American dreamer two years in a row, but of all the English-language films in Competition, this feels to me like the best bet. R.Pattz for Best Actor, on the other hand? I’m not sure the internet can handle that.

Cosmopolis on HitFix’s ‘In Contention’s Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of Cannes 2012’ List   Leave a comment

From Hitfix:

With today’s announcement of the Directors’ Fortnight selections, this year’s Cannes lineup is effectively complete — bar some late additions that festival director Thierry Frémaux has told us to expect. As it stands, however, it’s a pretty robust get-together of arthouse VIPs and auteurs on the rise, which made whittling down a list of my 10 most anticipated titles a tough job. Needless to say, there are plenty of films not on this list that I’m eager to see. These 10, however, are the ones that have me most excited and/or curious, from Lee Daniels’s “The Paperboy” to Michael Haneke’s “Amour.

2. “Cosmopolis” (David Cronenberg)

It seems odd to be welcoming Cronenberg to Cannes mere months after he brought “A Dangerous Method” to Venice; long may this newfound productivity continue. It’s especially gratifying given that his last film, for many fans, was a minor disappointment — typically smart but surprisingly starchy given the potentially tangy subject matter. The Don DeLillo adaptation “Cosmopolis,” however, should find him on more typically wild form: an absurdist tale of one billionaire’s odyssey across New York to get a haircut, it’s Cronenberg’s first self-penned script since 1999’s “eXistenZ.” The cast, meanwhile, is irresistibly eclectic: Robert Pattinson gets to show us what he’s really made of in the lead, with Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton, Paul Giamatti, Jay Baruchel and Mathieu Amalric all in support. Bring it on.
