UPDATE THURSDAY 1:00 PM:
Number revised upward to $68.5M
UPDATE THURSDAY 2:00 AM:
Early figures estimate that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will break the record for a Wednesday opening, taking in $65M. This tops the $62M brought in by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Included in the total is the $30M reported previously from midnight and 3:00 AM screenings. In comparison, The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in $72.7M from 4,024 theaters on its opening day, setting a new all-time single day box office record. Of course, that was a Friday, not a Wednesday.

These numbers are not official and are only estimates based on early reports. However, these preliminary figures are usually fairly close to the final data. Summit Entertainment will officially announce domestic and worldwide numbers later.

An article on the BBC website today confirms that Eclipse has broken the records set by the previous films for the takings from the midnight showings of the film in the US and Canada.
The latest film in the Twilight series has broken the record set by its predecessor for takings from midnight screenings in the US and Canada.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse made more than $30 million (£20.1m) from midnight screenings on Wednesday, according to its distributor Summit Entertainment.
That exceeded the $26.3m (£17.6m) New Moon made when it opened last November.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart star in Eclipse, the third instalment in the vampire romance series.
The film has its UK premiere later, with advance screenings to follow this weekend ahead of its official UK release on 9 July.
Neither Stewart and Pattinson will be at the London premiere, although it will be attended by director David Slade and other cast members.
Twilight fans – dubbed “Twi-hards” by some – lined up hours ahead of the first midnight showings.
Experts expect Eclipse to have a record-breaking US debut over the traditionally lucrative Fourth of July weekend.

The third film in the Twilight saga, Eclipse, opened at midnight in theatres on Wednesday, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) decided to bring this bit of pop-culture into the Senate hearings concerning the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. The hearings have been going on since Monday, with Kagan answering questions throughout each day.
“I guess it means you missed the midnight debut of the third Twilight movie last night,” Sen. Klobuchar said. “We did not miss it in our household, and it culminated in three 15-year-old girls sleeping over at 3 a.m.”
“I didn’t see that,” Kagan said.
“I keep wanting to ask you about the famous case of Edward v. Jacob, or The Vampire v. The Werewolf,” Sen. Klobuchar said, opening her questioning with a bit of lightheartedness.
“I wish you wouldn’t,” Kagan said with a laugh.
In the book and film series, the two characters — Edward, a vampire played by Robert Pattinson, and Jacob, a werewolf played by Taylor Lautner — battle for the love of the female lead, Bella.
As Kagan said in later testimony, a judge plays for neither team, but acts independently. She practices what she preaches, because she refused to commit to either Team Edward or Team Jacob.
