Robert Pattinson has been waiting for his new movie The Lost City of Z to be revealed to moviegoers for nearly a decade. That’s about how long ago the 30-year-old Twilight alum was first approached by writer-director James Gray for his adaptation of David Grann’s popular nonfiction book about explorer Percy Fawcett’s lengthy, dangerous search in the early 20th century for a hidden indigenous civilization in the Amazon.
Pattinson hung with the project through multiple lead changes (from Brad Pitt to Benedict Cumberbatch to, finally, Charlie Hunnam, who plays Fawcett). He even outgrew the role he was initially in the running for: Percy’s son Jack, played by Spider-Man Homecoming star Tom Holland. Pattison now portrays Henry Costin, a minor character in the book expanded for the screen, Fawcett’s hard-drinking, thick-bearded aide-de-camp. (The movie opens in theaters on Friday.)
In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Movies, Pattinson talked about the risks he’s attempted to take over the course of his career (even if no one noticed), if he’d ever consider returning to role of vampire Edward Cullen, and his embarrassing online habit that will pay dividends in one of his next films, Good Time.
The Twilight movies were clearly a huge blessing for Robert Pattinson, but also somewhat of a curse: The 28-year-old Brit has been working overtime to break out of the pin-up mold, gravitating toward edgy indies like David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis and this week’s The Rover, directed by Animal Kingdom filmmaker David Michôd. The sometimes brutally violent film features Pattinson as a left-for-dead “half-wit” who joins a vengeful Guy Pearce’s as they travel across a rural, post-apocalyptic Australia. The very candid Pattinson talked to us about getting down-and-dirty for the role, his strategy for keeping photographers away, and what artist has reignited his love for hip-hop.
Robert Pattinson may have found fame playing the sweet and sensitive Edward Cullen in ‘Twilight’, but omg! can reveal the real-life Rob has a penchant for bad-boy behaviour. Oooh! The gorgeous actor told us exclusively exactly what he got up while filming upcoming movie ‘Bel Ami’ and we were pretty shocked with his response!
Robert said “I liked fighting and drinking in Budapest [laughs].”
We think he meant while in character filming scenes in the Hungarian capital, but maybe this is what he got up to after hours. Rob in a fight? We can only hope this was over us!
Talk turned to what drew him to his latest on-screen venture and how it differed to ‘Twilight’.
“It was exhausting trying to fit so much in [to the film],” Robert said.
“‘Bel Ami’ is something different, every actor who has come on set is so baffled by the fact my character Georges doesn’t get his comeuppance.”
But what we’re really concerned about is which women are locking lips with our one true love in the film? Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas each get up close and personal with Robert in the movie and wow are we jealous.
And the actor only had good things to say about his co-stars too: “They are all very strong and had long careers so they know exactly how they want to do things.”
