The second-to-last installment of the record-breaking ‘Twilight’ franchise certainly ups the ante in terms of urgency. Edward, Bella and Jacob each grow exponentially in the movie, and we witness several rites of passage in under two hours: marriage, loss of virginity, the honeymoon, pregnancy, childbirth and (almost) death. Toss in some werewolf-on-vampire battle sequences and you’ve got yourself one dense film.

Beautiful, charming, intelligent, funny! Rob Pattz was another actor who this year had a chance to surprise us with another character. Like Jacob, in “Water for Elephants,” we saw something very different vampire Edward in “Breaking Dawn”. The penultimate film of the saga premiered in theaters in November and was a box office record.
The boy who sparkles. Edward Cullen, congratulations. With the end of Twilight in sight, he’s awoken the romantic in teen girls everywhere. And of course, he’s taking that longing with him in movies like Water for Elephants and the upcoming Bel Ami.

The penultimate “Twilight” flick may not have made our list of the best movies of 2011, but it’s hard to argue there was a more memorable scene — by which we mean totally goddamn bonkers — than the sequence when pregnant Bella Swan goes into labor and Edward Cullen, after realizing that a mere scalpel can’t free their vampire/human spawn, goes to work on his wife’s womb with his fangs. Blood is spilled, gasps and/or guffaws are unleashed by moviegoers (depending on each one’s relative level of Twi-hardness), and cinematic history is made.” — E.D.
