Where did you get the inspiration for the video?
Working closely with the team of Dior. Hundred lifetimes in a day and the words of James Dean: “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you were to die today.” The result is a character who goes through emotions and different places. Then, with the cinematographer André Chemetoff and production designer Jean -Michel Bertin, we looked for the best visual grammar to tell this story fragmented.
How would you describe the Dior Homme man?
The man we want to represent is someone light, at ease in any situation. It could be on a deserted beach, in a luxury hotel or in an empty house in which he has just moved: he would always be himself. We wanted to move away from the stereotype of the successful, rich and arrogant, and that is why we have added details such as the eighties car that leads to a certain point. The woman is another great way to characterize a man: in the video she is a simple girl, who doesn’t dress in a showy way.
Tell us story from the set?
We shot in Brooklyn, Rockaway Beach, immediately after the hurricane. Looking at the beach scene, you can note their signs, for example, the very high sand or cabins destroyed , which gave a strange, unexpected look in a video for a luxury perfume. Oh, and we also ended up in the sea with the car … It took two boats and a tractor to bring it to the dry sand!
The main difficulty?
Probably the fact of having to film in so many places at once. We had to run all over New York with Rob, who is a big star in Hollywood, dodging paparazzi and all the rest, to not reveal the images of the campaign before the release. Also, before meeting Rob, I had no idea how it would go because we had hectic, very active schedule and sometimes actors don’t like working under pressure. But he was great, he gave more than he asked, was with me one hundred percent. In addition, during the shoot, we had great fun.
What is your favorite scene
I really like the part on the beach, the first scene we shot. During the first shot there’s something always interesting happening at that moment you’ll know if what you had in mind will work or not. It was very nice to hear that it will work.
How was working with Rob?
Rob is extremely curious, he is leaving the phase of the Twilight “poster boy” to play more mature roles. He’s already making interesting and choices. Speaking as a director, I can say that he’s very easy to work with, an actor able to give so much.
Fragances often trigger memories. Do you have memories related to scents?
I remember my dad wearing Brut de Farbegé. He still has it, and it reminds me of my early school days. So strange it is so ingrained in me; I can still imagine exactly what it smelled like. Later when I was 12 and started talking to girls, I thought wearing perfume was the cool thing to do. I remember being on holiday in Portugal and watching teenagers going into bars. As I believed that splashing cologne would convince everyone I was an adult, I sure did: that and hair gel were my best friends that summer.
Are there landscapes or cities you associate with certain scents?
My dad comes from Yorkshire where the moors have miles of heather, and the smell of it is just incredible.
Do you have a favorite scent?
I like the smell of people! It is really odd and a total pherormone thing, but you can often tell someone’s nature by their smell. We hang out with people because they smell good to us on an unconscious level.
Now that you’re 27, is wearing fragance more feel-good gesture or a seduction move?
It still seems like a very adult thing to do. And if you go out with some fragance on, you are going out for a reason…
What woman could be wearing Dior Homme, in your eyes?
A free spirit. A woman of her own mind, refusing to smell “pretty” or do what’s expected of her. And clearly a woman who is not confused about her idea of femininity.
How sweet is the smell of success?
Being an actor is a weird thing and one’s idea of success, strangely enough, changes over the years. But there is the “sweet” side of success: I don’t have to worry and work just for money, for a few years at least. I have an enourmous amount of respect for films, so I’m trying to use whatever time, energy and influence I have to make interesting choices that no one else is making. I just said I was “trying” but it’s funny you know: I do not really feel like I have been successful yet. There is something about Dior that is very close to my present state of mind: it is almost aggessively independent, and that is what I’m trying to do with everything at that stage of my life.
You never seem to relax, but when you do, what’s your favorite…
Spot to relax? In the English countryside. Piece of literature?Anything by Martin Amis. Piece of music, musician or band? Probably Van Morrison. Moment of the day? That changes depending on what I did the day before. Pastime? I do not really have any. But it’s probably something to do with music. Animal to be around? My two dogs. Word to hear? Yes.
Australia will flex its Hollywood muscle in Los Angeles next week, with Baz Luhrmann, Jacki Weaver, Joel Edgerton and Alex O’Loughlin among the list of Aussies to be honoured at a benefit dinner in Los Angeles.
The dinner, organised by LA-based non-profit Australians in Film, will also include plenty big name non-Aussies, headed by Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson, Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell and Matrix duo Andy and Lana Wachowski who will present awards.
With a little help from Google Translate, seems like this interview is a compilation of other Dior promo interviews we’ve read so far, but with a few new questions. There are 3 new questions.
If you haven’t heard by now, the Oscar winner is likely replacing her bestie Naomi Watts to star opposite Pattinson in Queen of the Desert, a period piece about British writer, traveler, archeologist and spy Gertrude Bell.
“That’s OK, I’ll be ready,” Kidman told me about the Twi-fans when I caught up with her Variety’s Power of Women event on Friday. “I think they’ll have a tough time finding us over there in Morocco, won’t they?”
Kidman did admit she still isn’t officially attached to the project. “It’s not all signed, sealed and delivered,” she said. “But…it’s certainly in rapid sort of motion.”
