Bill Condon talks about Breaking Dawn and mentions Robert Pattinson in an interview with Movieline
There are some interesting cinematic things you’ve done that seem to make that point — one is the use of Bride of Frankenstein in your Edward flashback. What was the thinking behind that?
We sort of watched Edward have this heavy cloud this whole time, and it’s referred to in the book; it actually came out of a discussion with Rob Pattinson. He’d been playing something that was described in the book with just a couple of lines — this period when he broke away from Carlisle and wasn’t a vegetarian anymore. He sort of explored what it was like to hunt humans. And he only killed terrible men, murderers, things like that, but the point is it made him… he says, “I looked her your eyes and saw who I was, when I’d become a monster,” and it was only after this period that he returned to Carlisle and fully embraced their way of living. But it always remained sort of a heavy burden for him, and that’s something that Rob had been playing. I was like, “Well god, you’ve been playing that without even seeing that.” So as a last moment before the wedding he does kind of lay out one last argument for why Bella might want to rethink it, you know? And that gave me a chance to show him, in that period — in the early ’30s in Chicago, and in this case, in a movie theater. And of course I chose Bride of Frankenstein as the movie he’s watching. Partly because it’s one of my favorite movies, and one of the greatest horror movies ever made. But also, it’s sort of this story, isn’t it? [Laughs] She is the bride of Frankenstein!
That’s the way fans are used to seeing The Twilight Saga couple Bella Swan and Edward Cullen dance around each other, as depicted in three movies based on the phenomenally successful books by Stephenie Meyer.
Sure, there’s flashes of heartbreak, of longing looks, of petting verging on the heavy, but those scenes are saturated in the same youthful innocence, of teen angst mingling with a certain kind of romance that never strays too far from being, well, above the covers. No swearing and certainly no sex. Ever.
But things are hotting up in the perpetually gloomy outpost of Forks, USA.
The Twilight Saga’s fourth film instalment – Breaking Dawn Part I – has these star-crossed lovers married, copulating, having a genetically questionable baby, and, once again, fighting the forces of darkness to save the future of mankind. And vampirekind, and werewolfkind.
The honeymoon sex scene in this, the first of two films charting the final book of the series, was reportedly so steamy, the actors were recalled to set to reshoot them. The original version was too explicit to pass the censors.
Reports of excessive “thrusting” by Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, were bandied about as attracting frowns from US standard-bearers.
They get married and then finally they do … well you know what. I mean we’ve been waiting 3 movies for this, I mean you took your time, Rob. Rob: I was like why didn’t they just watched a porno. But really it was an important scene for us because it’s not detailled in the book.
It’s pretty violent, isn’t it? Rob: Well it’s sort of passionate, like intense love making.
Are you that brutal in your sex life? Rob: Absolutely,I’ve smashed many walls.
Your hotel room is going to be a disaster tomorrow? Rob: It’s everywhere, even when I’m by myself.
Vampires are in right now. Remember how I dressed up with Nikkos at the Dracula Premiere. So I tried to be one of you. Rob: It’s good.
It’s good, it’s not too old fashioned? Rob: No, no, it looks very realistic. You look a little bit too brown, tho like a vampire from Nice.
Unlike most actors, the English Robert Pattinson, 25 years of old, thinks sex scenes are easy. There are other things that are scarier: having to appear shirtless or doing comedy, especially in TV Shows like Saturday Night Live, as he told Epoca in two interviews: one as a roundtable and another exclusive one:
EPOCA – All actors say that sex scenes are very awkward to do, you always have a lot of people around. As you and Kristen know each other so well, was it easier?
Pattinson – Actually I don’t think doing sex scenes is weird. You know that nobody will say anything, the directors don’t want to embarrass themselves, they won’t tell you how to do it. But it’s fun to do them with Kristen, it seems kind of silly. In fact, it becomes more difficult. When you don’t know the other person you won’t say she’s doing something silly, or joke all the time. If you know the person, it’s more risky (laughs).
EPOCA – Kristen Stewart said the wedding scene was as if she were living it. How was it for you?
Pattinson – Kind of easy. Especially in the beginning. There was so much expectation because of the dress, paparazzi everywhere that Kristen was very stressed. As she was walking to the altar, and the camera approaching me, I started to get nervous because I saw how shocked she was. So I had to think that I needed to support her and act as if I knew what I was doing (laughs).
Breaking into his impish grin, Robert said about an actor in a much-anticipated scene in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” “I thought he was a real priest in the scene when we were getting married. He kept forgetting what our characters’ names were. He called us Robert and Kristen. She told me that he wasn’t a real priest.”
Asked how many beds were used in his bed-shaking sex scene with Kristen, Robert laughed and replied, “It was just one bed but it was a trick bed. It was unusual to do a sex scene when there’s a whole stunt set-up. There were three guys behind the bed who controlled the bed. I’m trying to do a sex scene and a guy is cueing me for when the bed breaks. I’m also looking at the big guy lying underneath, on the floor.”
He explained, “When you’re doing a sex scene, people don’t really give you that much pressure on the set because for one thing, a director doesn’t want to step in and suggest how he would do it (laughing). Because it’s probably uncomfortable for him, too.”
“I was protective of Kristen,” he admitted about filming the scene. “She is so much more comfortable with her body than I am. I was thinking, we must keep the sheet up in between takes. But that was really more for her. That was probably the scariest part – having to be judged by your physicality. I was trying to avoid that in the entire series.”
Robert did workouts to be in shape for the shirtless scenes. “Yeah, for a while,” he said. With a chuckle, he quipped, “But as soon as I didn’t have to take my shirt off, I stopped.”
He’s been named one of the world’s 100 most influential people but Robert Pattinson couldn’t look less conspicuous if he tried.
Lounging on a plush sofa at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, his white T-shirt features a tiny rip front and centre, his shoelaces are unlaced and his baseball cap is on backwards.
In short, he’s disarmingly understated and approachable, immediately offering a cheery hello that quickly reaches his blue-green eyes.
“I can’t wait for this film to come out,” he says of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.
“I feel like we’ve been talking about it for months. Well, I have!”
He’s the first to admit that this movie is different from the previous three, which are also based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer.
