You have another period piece with Bel Ami coming out. Do you enjoy doing that type of work?
MEANEY: It’s interesting because I haven’t done a lot of period work in the past, but I always wanted to because I’m interested in history. Also, as an actor, my background is in the theater and I feel that my strong suit is period work, but I actually didn’t do much of it at all, until the last three or four years. I’m loving it!
Who are you playing in Bel Ami, and what was that cast like to work with?
MEANEY: It takes place in France, in the last 1870′s and 1880′s, with all the shenanigans and wheeling and dealing going on in the business world. The story is about this young man who gets out of the army. He was an officer in the army and he goes to Paris to get a job, but he’s not doing too well. He’s down on his luck. And, he meets a friend of his who was an officer with him in the army, who works the press, and he gets him a job on the newspaper he works for. And then, he meets this guy’s wife, and he meets the wives of the editors, and he ends up having relationships with all these woman, and basically screws his way to the top. That’s the story.
It was a great cast. The three women were Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci. And, Robert Pattinson is terrific. He’s a very, very good young actor. For him, it was an important step away from the whole Twilight thing. I think they’re having some post-production questions about it, so it’s taking a lot of time to come out, but it was such a pleasure to do. Kristin Scott Thomas is such an actress. What an amazing actress. My character is married to Kristin.

Hey guys, there’s been a lot of talk and online speculation about the release date of BEL AMI, which stars Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas. We can confirm that we will be releasing BEL AMI in the first quarter of 2012, however the exact date has not been confirmed – yet. We will announce more details soon – you’ll be the first to know:)
Bel Ami has at least 14 different distributors on my list. Hopscotch is for Australia & New Zealand. Not that 1st qtr 2012 won’t apply in US. Bel Ami distributors: Incognito for Estonia, Latvia, & Lithuania; Independent for Netherlands; Kinowelt for Germany; Optimum for UK; Studio Canal for France; 01 for Italy; California for Brazil; Camilla Internusa for Indonesia; CatchPlay for Taiwan; Central Partnership for Russia; Front Row for UAE & Middle East; Hollywood for Greece; Hopscotch for Aus & NZ; UniKorea for Korea.
But I think it’s safe to assume if OZ/NZ distrib says 1st qtr ’12 that means it will premiere somewhere before the end of March. 😉

Natalia Tena talks about meeting Robert Pattinson and Bel Ami in an interview with The Herald
They met in their late teens on a photoshoot for up-and-coming British actors. Afterwards they went to the pub and got drunk. Tena was holding down two bar jobs at the time, so actor Tom Sturridge, also on the shoot, rang her boss and said she’d had an accident and wasn’t coming in. “Needless to say I got fired,” she says. They then decided to go to Berlin, but only got as far as Tena’s flat. She couldn’t find her passport. “We had this summer of being really close,” she says. “Then I remember Robert taking me out a few months later. He was like, ‘I’m just saying goodbye because I’m going to America for a few months to do some vampire thing.’ I said ‘Cool, I’ll see you when you get back.’” And she explodes into laughter. “Now he’s massive. Literally massive. He used to be like a labrador puppy, but he’s much more mature and serious now.” So no problem with the sex scene in Bel Ami, then? “Because we know each other, it was cool,” she says. “We just took the piss. I said ‘You just bang me. Can we make it like anal sex, because it looks worse?’” Read the rest of the interview at The Herald.
Vanity Fair: You also shot Bel Ami, by Guy de Maypassant’s novel with Robert Pattinson
Uma Thurman: Robert is beautiful. Almost more beautiful in person than on screen. He is also a good actor. He will make a great career, there will not be only Twilight in his career
