Anton Corbijn talks about LIFE and Robert Pattinson with ‘Dazed’ magazine

In your films you’ve portrayed talented men who burn out young – Ian Curtis in Control, and now James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock. Are you interested in the myth-making process that happens around these guys?
Anton Corbijn: If anything, it’s unmasking because I always bring it down to very normal life. In photography I can imagine that people think I make images iconic, but with films I don’t think that’s the case. The film with James Dean is actually about the photographer. He’s the lead role, they just share screen time. I had a similar experience when I was young in Holland. I became the photographer of somebody who became the biggest rock star we ever had there (Herman Brood), so it was interesting to see how that balance works when I thought I was helping him and he probably thought he was helping me. It’s the same with this story.

Was it an easy process casting Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan in your upcoming film Life?
Anton Corbijn: Dane didn’t want to take a meeting with me initially, as he couldn’t see himself in James Dean’s shoes. But he was persuaded by a mutual friend, and said yes in the end. He’s fabulous, a very good actor. Rob was interested in the film because he really wants to prove himself and for me that was great for that role. If you look at the roles he’s taking on – like the ones withCronenberg – he really wants to do very different, non-mainstream films and get out of that pigeonhole.

Anton Corbijn talks about Robert Pattinson and LIFE Leave a comment
Anton Corbijn talked a little about Rob and more about Life’s release a recent interview with The Playlist.

What about Robert Pattinson’s work in the movie?
Rob and Dan very different kind of actors. They’re very, very different kind of people in the film, so it was fantastic. They were so different naturally. For Rob to play a photographer is quite interesting because he’s being chased by photographers all the time. Rob is of course a film star, but he likes to be seen as an actor, so he works very hard to be an actor and be valued as an actor. And in the film he plays this photographer who wants to be seen as a great photographer. So I think there’s a parallel there that’s helpful. He’s made a lot of interesting acting choices, “Cosmopolis”…
…Yeah, “The Rover.” I hear that “Map to the Stars” is a really great film. I am looking forward to seeing it.I was hoping to see “Life” announced as part of the TIFF 2014 lineup.
Yeah, I was hoping that too, but we are too far from finishing, because we finished [shooting] in late October. Will we see it at on the fall festival circuit anywhere?
I reckon it will be 2015.
ETA: One more interview of Anton Corbijn talks about Rob and LIFE
Like some of his recent films, it’s a very different movie for Pattinson.
The screentime is easily divided between Dane DeHaan and Rob, and they’re very different actors. Rob, I think he’s working to be seen as a proper actor and not as a movie star. He takes a lot of challenging roles, and tries to work with directors that are a bit away from the mainstream. The fact that he maybe wants to prove himself as an actor was very good for the role of Dennis Stock, who wants to prove himself as being a great photographer. Also, for Rob to be on the other end of the camera was quite interesting.Did you give Pattinson advice on being a photographer?
I got a camera to him quite a few months before we started shooting. An old Leica so he could put film in it and get comfortable with it.

Google Translate for now:
On a terrace at the windswept the Palais des Festivals, a man with his head tucked into his shoulders, pulls on his cigarette. A bodyguard stands a few meters from him. The anonymous smoker is Robert Pattinson. With two films in the official selection, Maps To The Stars, by David Cronenberg, and The Rover, by David Michôd, the actor was one of the attractions in Cannes. When you arrive at our rendezvous on the Croisette, he was not very fresh. The day before he was closing the Silencio, the Parisian club relocated during the festival . He woke up ten minutes before appointments with the press.

Anton Corbijn mentions Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan on his website 3 comments
This photograph is our first publicity shot from the film LIFE that i am currently shooting in Canada and USA. It is the story of James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock, set in early 1955. In the back of the car sits Jimmy as played by Dane DeHaan and in the passenger seat is Dennis, played by Robert Pattinson. Both guys are fantastic and are giving the film very good energy despite the very harsh winter we encountered in Canada.
Dane DeHaan Talks About Rob and ‘LIFE’ 1 comment

Dane DeHaan has revealed that he made no attempt to become friends with Robert Pattinson before they started filming Life
The Amazing Spider-Man actor stars alongside the Twilight heartthrob in Anton Corbijn’s drama, focusing on the friendship between Life photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and Hollywood icon James Dean (De Haan).
“It’s an interesting relationship that they have. They do become close in the film, and they do become friends, but they’re not friends from the start,” he said.
“So what we did is we didn’t try to make any sort of friendship beforehand. We got there and that’s when our friendship started. So as it was happening on screen, it was also happening in real life.”
The 28-year-old said they bonded on set, adding: “He’s a really nice guy. He’s totally chill and he’s fun to hang out with, and he’s fun to be on set with. We had a great time.”
Sir Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton also star in Life, which wrapped shooting on April 1.
“We just finished a week and a half ago,” Dane said.
Life, which is now in post-production, is expected to be released later this year.
