ROB’S INTERVIEW
Were you familiar with Don DeLillo’s novel?
No. But I had read some of his other novels. I first read the screenplay David Cronenberg sent me, and then the novel. One is incredibly true to the other, it is faithful in a way that seems impossible, for a novel that see med impossible to adapt. But even before reading the book, what impressed me the most about the script was the quick-paced rhythm and the unrelenting tension.
What was it about this film that appealed to you the most?
Cronenberg, obviously! I have played in only a few films, and none of them came close to what I expected working with him would be like. I wasn’t disappointed… I knew he would be very creative, and that it would be a real experience. And I was appealed by the writing of the script, like a kind of long poem. And a mysterious poem too. Usually when you read a script, you quickly know what it is about, where it is going, how it will end, even if there might be unexpected or sophisticated twists and turns in the plot. But this time it was completely different, the further I read, the less I could figure out where it was leading, and the more I wanted to be a part of it. It doesn’t fit any film genre whatsoever, it is in a league of its own.
Could sign as “always known”. This year, in version 65 of the Cannes Film Festival, filmmakers were selected again usually awarded and praised by the most important meetings of world cinema. David Cronenberg, who has participated three times in 1996 and won the special award for Crash, is one of those who first meets the eye. The Canadian is in Cosmopolis,the film based on the novel by Don DeLillo.
Cronenberg’s film was one of the most anticipated and in accordance with the images of the official trailer is a return to aesthetics and some gore from tough beginning. Robert Pattinson, the actor in the Twilight saga, this is Eric Packer, a billionaire who rides in his limousine through the streets of Manhattan while looking where to cut his hair. The film depicts the odyssey of sex, drugs and lust for one day in the life of Packer. Cosmopolisalso has starring Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti, among others.
Journalist (J): The film, produced by Paulo Branco Portuguese, will compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The list chosen to tender, selected by the jury, was released this morning in Paris and includes the movie Cosmopolis, directed by David Cronenberg and produced by Paulo Branco. The film has been touted as one of the movies of the year and his debut is generating great expectations. The main actor is Robert Pattinson, star of movies of the Twilight saga, which has built an army of fans around the world.
I: Paulo, good evening. This is the 11th movie that you produce and has been selected to the competition in Cannes – the most important film festival in Europe. From what we saw in the trailer and from the little we know, this is not an European movie. Is this your most important movie?
PB: Well, as a producer I like to think all movies are important, but this one is special, of course. It’s a movie where, for the first time, I worked the way they do on the other side of the Atlantic. It was filmed in Toronto with one of the best directors in the world, David Cronenberg, that was kind enough to listen and accept my proposal, and with great Hollywood actors. And it’s the first time I work on a movie this big and with this budget.
I:We’re talking about a major production?
PB: We’re talking about a medium American production, about 15M Euros. A French-Canadian movie. We had as much support from France as from Canada. Although, it is a budget that indie producers are not used to, especially with the freedom I had to produce this movie: choosing the director, David Cronenberg, and the actors (along with Cronenberg). It was an unique experience. I am proud (for the movie) to be in Cannes now; to be aknowledged. Every movie in Cannes, in competition, they’re not just “another movie”. It’s always something special, someone who has been and follows the festival, can understand.
I:The cast and crew of this movie is impressive. Famous director, David Cronenberg. The main actors are, I should say, even more famous (Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson, from the Twilight Saga). I want to know if there’s anything planned for the release of the movie in Portugal in May with them?
PB:Precisely. It was created some sort of empathy with Don de Lillo, David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson, that since the beginning, when I talked about the idea of doing a small promo tour in Europe to promote the movie, starting in Portugal, they immediately accepted. They’ll be here right after Cannes for the Portuguese premiere of the movie. I think it’s an unique event, for a movie premiere, in Portugal. And an example of professionalism and devotion from the people that worked in this film. For Pattinson, this project is essential. He watched the movie and personally told me that it was, maybe, the project that he was most proud of and wanted to support it wherever it was necessary. The last question is hard to understand, Paulo Branco talks about Cannes, promoting and selling movies at the festival.
It’s going to be a freaky time on the Croisette…the most promising non-”Twilight” role forRobert Pattinson yet as the billionaire Eric Packer who has one helluva day in his limousine. Sex, drugs, hallucinations and more cross his path, and for anyone worried Cronenberg had become respectable with “A Dangerous Method” he’s in full form here, even going back to his psycho-sexual roots in what looks like something out of a Terry Gilliam film inspired by an LSD trip.
This trailer expands on the mind-bending bits found in the first, with a great look at what will certainly be Pattinson’s meatiest role yet. I love the imagery Cronenberg is playing with, as it looks to be something straight out of one of his 80s/early 90s classics.
{TB EXCLUSIVE} ROBERT PATTINSON TO RE-TEAM WITH DAVID CRONENBERG IN “MAPS TO THE STARS”
The ubiquitous “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson is doing everything he can to not be described as “‘Twilight’ star Pattinson”, and if it takes attaching himself to every upcoming David Cronenberg project to do so, by God he will follow through.
Pattinson has just become attached as a supporting actor in director Cronenberg’s upcoming darkly comedic drama, MAPS TO THE STARS. The pic, to which Viggo Mortensen is already attached, details the story of two child actors ruined by Hollywood’s depravity. Pattinson is said to play Jerome, a chauffeur by day and struggling actor by night. Scribe Bruce Wagner, who was originally set to direct until Cronenberg took the reigns in 2006, penned the script.
This news comes just before the May release of the anticipated Cronenberg project starring Pattinson, “Cosmopolis”, based on the Don DeLillo novel of the same name. Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a young billionaire who attempts to visit his father’s barber across Manhattan but is thwarted by a series of unlikely events.
“Maps to the Stars” will also be Mortensen’s fourth project with Cronenberg, having first worked together when he took the lead in “A History of Violence”.
Pattinson is currently in active development on “Unbound Captives”, a period drama that will also star Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.
