NEW Robert Pattinson Interview with The Sunday Times 4 comments
The beauty of the beast
Robert Pattinson on swapping his vampire fangs for the dark arts of a serial seducer in his new film, Bel Ami.
“The world’s favourite vampire is in Berlin for a whirlwind visit and, true to bloodsucking type, Robert Pattinson isn’t eating. Tonight, he will do the red-carpet thing for the world premiere of his new film, Bel Ami, but in the private hotel lounge allocated for this interview — “This is classy,” he comments as he strolls in — he barely makes a dent in the chicken salad he has ordered, despite his professed hunger.
Pattinson isn’t known for playing characters who do much smiling or laughing, either, so the first thing to notice is how readily he does both in person. Decked out in a black-grey ensemble and sporting a new cropped haircut under his black cap, he has barely sat down, with a pack of Camels by his side, before he’s folded up in mirth, talking about the KitKatClub, a notorious Berlin sex joint, and his desire to patronise it with his family. Is he joking? I hope not. “I was telling my dad about it last night, and he sounded really into it. ‘I’m coming over — let’s go to the orgy club.’ ”
The 25-year-old actor has been to Berlin many times. One of the best holidays he ever had was a stay in the east when he was 17, “before it was so gentrified”, frequenting bars that took up illegal residence in abandoned buildings. Such footloose times are seemingly in the past for the star of Twilight, although his desire to hit the KitKatClub may indicate otherwise. The other observation to make is that Pattinson is a very handsome man, but his face is less wide and flat than the camera makes it appear. And there are enough imperfections to separate him from the standard Hollywood pretty boy.
Nobody wants to see a dickhead succeed — that’s why I wanted to do it.
It is easy to see why he is ideal casting as a heart-throb vampire, but equally why he got the role of Georges Duroy, the insatiable money-and-lust monster at the heart of Bel Ami. This adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s belle époque novel marks the directing debut of two of our most acclaimed theatre practitioners — Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, the founders of Cheek by Jowl. Of the projects Pattinson has chosen with the Twilight safety net in place, the first two, Remember Me (2010) and Water for Elephants (2011), were unadventurous romantic excursions, unlikely to perturb even the most rabid Twihard. Bel Ami is where it gets interesting.

Interview from the German press junket. Translation of the dubbing:
Nick: It’s a wonderful story about a young man with barely any talent but who makes his way towards the French society in the 1890s.
Declan: He is a mini shark in a world of sharks. He’s learning to swim with them until he gets to become the biggest one. I thought it was an interesting modern parable.
Nick: It’s about a press that invents stories and that’s exactly what happens in …. situation in Britain today.
Declan: But at that time phone tappings didn’t exist.
Christina: Well, he’s seducing them and one of the ways of doing that is to give them what they want.
Declan: These women are all quite happy married in a way which is interesting. But they’re ready to do everything for/when it comes to sex which is something that is more male oriented, like we have many many very famous instances recently.
Declan: You hear all lot about women getting undone and ready to abandon everything because they’re irreparably attracted by a man who’s pretty much worthless. It’s intriguing and scary to see people being self-destructed because of this.
Declan: He mirrors what those women want to hear in the dinner scene. He’s waiting to hear what they’re going to say and then he replies what they want to hear. They think that they charm him and he’s charming back at them.
Interview with Robert Pattinson: I loved playing a player in ‘Bel Ami’ 3 comments
LA Times made a nice article with the answers that were given at the Press Conference in Berlin about Bel Ami:
A corrupt government –- supported by a corrupt media –- that seeks to invade an Arab country for its resources is how Declan Donnellan described his film adaptation of the 1885 Guy de Maupassant novel “Bel Ami,” which focuses on France’s complex relationship with Morocco.
But Donnellan and collaborator Nick Ormerod’s movie, which premieres Friday at the Berlin Film Festival, will get attention for a less geopolitical reason: It stars Robert Pattinson.

Cosmopolis Costume Designer Denise Cronenberg talks about working with Robert Pattinson 1 comment
Denise Cronenberg, Cosmopolis costume designer (and David Cronenberg’s sister) talked to Grazia Live about working with Rob
Grazia Daily: You’re working on Cosmopolis with Robert Pattinson now, what’s that been like?
Denise Cronenberg: Oh, he’s lovely! He’s such a nice, sweet kid. He’s intelligent and smart; he was very brave to take on something like this because I think he was quite hesitant at first. But David is wonderful with actors and he’s a father of three, so he uses that. He and Robert had a wonderful relationship. It was an unusual film to do, very unusual. We had to do a rave, street fires and have cars exploding for this film! David and I decided what we thought we’d put Robert in. I then talked to Gucci who were incredible and gave us all his clothes. He’s dressed from head to toe in Gucci from the tie to his socks! And we had no money, like really, no money so we could never have done it without them.
