Rob: I remember the first conversation we had was on the phone cause I had to wait a week before I said yes ’cause I was, I didn’t … Normally you have to … actors are good at bullshiting, no matter what the script is, you’ve got something to say about it. You even have to admit if you hate it but you have something to say. And with this one, I just couldn’t … I was like, I know there was … I know it’s about something but I don’t know what it was about. But David just said, you know, he doesn’t know what it was about either but there’s just something interesting there.

Rob: I guess slightly more obscure things. I mean especially with the fact that this one had a strange script already and it’s in competition in Cannes. There’s no logic to the world.
David: There is none.

Rob: What I liked about it in the first place was the cadence of the lyricism of the writing. I think that’s what I enjoyed playing about it ’cause you couldn’t really approach it like a normal part, it was like, you’re approaching it like it was a song or something.

Rob: It was one of the strangest things when we were shooting, we had one scene by the train station, the first shot of the movie, and we’ve been inside the limo during the whole shoot and suddenly I have to get out and there was like … Twilight fans and stuff and I was .. I’ve never been more nervous in my entire life. That was … it was terrifying.

*SCAN* Robert Pattinson interview in Vanity Fair Italy   4 comments

Here’s a short snippet from the interview that will be published in the Vanity Fair Italy. The full interview will appear in n. 30 of Vanity Fair which hits newsstands on May 23.

better translation of the Q&A thanks to herm-weasley at pattinsonlife)

He likes to think of as cynical as the character he plays in Cosmopolis, his new film in competition at Cannes, “but the reality is that they are naive.” But the rest has clear ideas

Men in suits, bodyguard in mirrored sunglasses and earphones. The sky above Mahhattan is a gray and, during the two hours of Cosmopolis, will turn increasingly to black.
Eric Packer, golden boy of finance, enter into a limo and its driver, face sculpted by man of the Russian intelligence services, informs him that traffic was paralyzed for the visit of President of the United States. But he is not interested now just needs a good haircut, and the only barber in a position to satisfy the other side of town. (…)

Transpose into a Hollywood movie one of the most visionary novels of Don DeLillo – written in 2001, is a prophecy of Occupy Wall Street and everything that we are living – was an impossible task that only a director like David Cronenberg’s brave could succeed. And just as brave as a director David Cronenberg was reminded of entrusting the starring Robert Pattinson.

It is true that Pattinson is not only Twilight, the saga will end November 14 with
Breaking Dawn – Part 2: between one episode and others, has also starred in Remember Me (2010), Water for Elephants (2011) and the recent Bel Ami. But it is clear that a character like this can do for him the difference between staying anchored to the fangs of the vampire Edward Cullen and be admitted into the club of actors to Serie A.

In Cosmopolis – premiering at Cannes – Pattinson keeps the pallor that made fall in love all over the world, girls and boys grew up, the romantic air of Edward, however, has disappeared. (…)

Do you have any idea why David Cronenberg chose you?
I don’t, to be honest. But I never wondered why, I’m just happy he did.

In “Cosmopolis” there are sex scenes which are quite explicit: weren’t you embarrassed?
I was more nervous for the actresses. When a man takes off his clothes he may feel stupid, but in the end he enjoys himself. I think it’s different for a woman, more problematic.

In real life, are you more sweet or passionate?
Passionate, I hope.

One of your best friends, British actor Tom Sturridge, is having a baby with Sienna Miller. Would you like to become a father?
Sure. Not right now, but yes, of course.

Have you made any plans with Kristen yet?
Not yet. We haven’t planned anything.

Do you feel ready to move in with her?
[sings to hide the embarrassment] I’m ready for everything.

Robert Pattinson talks Cosmopolis and competing with On The Road in Cannes   Leave a comment

Robert Pattinson, 26, stars as a Wall Street banker in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, shot primarily in the back of his character’s giant white limousine — where Pattinson’s banker has a tryst with 48-year-old French actress Juliette Binoche. Pattinson then does Efron one better.

“There’s a scene where I’m seducing (another woman) naked, while having a prostate exam in the back of a limousine. People don’t really see that very often in movies,” Pattinson says with a laugh. “You do what you can to surprise people.”

(…)

The red carpet lineup also will feature Twilight’s golden couple, Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. This time they are going head-to-head, with Stewart starring in the competition film On the Road.

“I’m already making excuses,” Pattinson jokes about their friendly festival competition.

But for these two weeks, it’s not all about winning the contest, but enjoying the glitz in the South of France.

“There is really something glamorous about Cannes,” Pattinson says.”It’s the bow ties and the way the festival holds onto the glamour. People really make an effort.”

ETA: New Article added – Rob talks about Cannes and Cosmopolis

Whereas Penn and Pitt are familiar favorites at Cannes, this year’s festival includes a new crop of young actors seeking more adventurous work, including LaBeouf, Efron and Pattinson.

“When you fantasize about how the world views you as an actor, you’re like, ‘I want to be recognized at Cannes,'” says Pattinson, who has drawn high compliments from his director, Cronenberg, for his performance in “Cosmopolis.”

Pattinson has previously been to Cannes to promote the “Twilight” film “New Moon” in 2009, but he’s clearly thrilled to be a part of the main slate.

“Hopefully, people don’t hate it,” he says, alluding to Cannes’ famously vocal audiences.

Screenslam: How and Why Robert Pattinson was Cast as Eric Packer in COSMOPOLIS   2 comments

Screenslam has a nice interview up on their site. Some parts seem to come from the Press kitt I think:

ROBERT PATTINSON ERIC PACKER COSMOPOLIS – In Cosmopolis, Eric Packer is a selfish young member of the ruling class, at the top of the super-rich 1%. He is an anti-hero whose privileged reality is decadent and isolated. Casting Robert Pattinson in this unsympathetic role wasn’t obvious. Robert’s super-stardom perhaps gives him some insight to the pressures of success, but his pressures include the attention of a zealous fan base that might expect him in a different role. And he is younger than Eric Packer was envisioned, an age difference that influences the rest of the casting process. On the other hand, young billionaires and tech-savvy traders are not unusual in today’s society. Plus, casting Robert presents an opportunity to attract a new generation to David Cronenberg’s work.

Upcoming: French TV show “Personne ne bouge” dedicated to David Cronenberg (and Cosmopolis)   Leave a comment

Translation:

Meeting with David Cronenberg whose film is in competition in Cannes Film Festival.

“Personne ne bouge” is heading to Toronto, we’re not going to shop for maple syrup but we’re going to meet David Cronenberg. Just a few days before his coming back on the Croisette for Cosmopolis, the adaptation of Don De Lillo’s eponymous novel ( and with Robert Pattinson in the lead), Cronenberg will speak about his cinema and his irristible attraction towards weird violence sequences. Cosmopolis is like this. Capitalism, chaos and paranoia: we already say this film is going to be a formal shock, a king of “urban hallucination”.

This show will be broadcasted on Sunday May 20th at 5.35 pm local time ( so 11.35 am ET and 6.35 am PT)

David Cronenberg: “Robert Pattinson will surprise you”
“I’m very excited about the film and even more by Robert Pattinson’s performance.Rob is a wonderful actor and I think he will surprise people . He is young, he’s handsome, he has had great success with Twilight and many people concluded that he was a bad actor. I aware of that . But I can assure you he is very good and he works very seriously. The best way. Besides I can not wait to rework again with him. I even said I would love to have him and Viggo Mortensen in an upcoming film.”
