COSMOPOLIS SUPPORTING CAST –
As everyone knows by now that Robert Pattinson plays Eric Packer in David Cronenberg‘s Cosmopolis. What they might not know is who is Rob’s supporting cast. From the masterful Paul Giamatti, and the fresh talents of Sarah Gadon and Jay Baruchel to French luminaries Juliette Binoche and Mathieu Amalric, Cronenberg has assembled an impressive cast. Pattinson sums up the ensemble cast:“All the actors come from different backgrounds, have different personalities and have all done completely different kinds of movies. They didn’t know a lot about the film, but everybody wants to work with David and that’s why they’re here.”
You’d think any actor would jump at the chance to work in a film that stars Robert Pattinson. Think of the exposure they’d get!
However, one of Pattinson’s Cosmopolis costars says it wasn’t the Twilight hunk that drew him to the film…
“Everybody keeps asking me what Pattinson was like,” Jay Baruchel told us last night at the premiere if his new film Goon at the Directors Guild in West Hollywood.
“He’s a lovely man, incredibly polite and very disarming, but I was just there because [director] David Cronenberg is my idol,” he said. “I got to be directed by my hero and I would have just picked up his dry cleaning, so the fact that I’m in it—I don’t even remember what I did. I was just kind of there watching the whole time.”
In the flick, Baruchel plays a man who starts a tech company alongside Pattinson. And we’re surprised to hear none of Baruchel’s friends or family begged him to come to set to meet the Breaking Dawn actor.
“I surround myself with girls who keep their stuff on the DL,” he grinned. “So I think my sister kept it to herself.”
Is Baruchel even a Twilight fan? He laughed, “Not really.”
Too bad Cronenberg didn’t direct one of the Twi-flicks!
While promoting “Goon,” a film he stars in and co-wrote, Jay Baruchel shared his experiences working for a short period of time on the Manhattan set of “Cosmopolis.” Unfortunately for the Pattinson fans out there, according to Baruchel, Cronenberg’s next movie might be too strange for them.
“An exceedingly strange movie,” Baruchel said, describing “Cosmopolis.” “All the Team Edward girls won’t be seeing this one, I don’t think.”
For Baruchel, working with Cronenberg — who made a name for himself with horror films — was a dream come true.”Basically, it was that Cronenberg is a hero of mine. I’m a Canadian boy. I love horror. That’s all I want to do,” Baruchel said. “If you’re a Canadian horror fan, Cronenberg’s the Holy Grail.”
The opportunity for Baruchel came about in a rather mundane way, but his reaction to it was anything but. “I was in Manhattan last year, keeping my lady company, and they called up and were like, ‘Hey, do you want to do two days on this new Cronenberg?’ I said, ‘Yep!’ ‘Wait, wait. We’ll send you the script.’ I couldn’t care less; what I’m playing is a means to an end. I just want to go and film-nerd-out about ‘Videodrome’ with him for two days.”
The actual experience of working with Cronenberg did not disappoint. “Not only did I get to go and be a fly on the wall for two days and watch one of my heroes do his thing, I actually had the pleasure being directed by him,” Baruchel said. “Coolest thing ever.”

FANG: You and your GOOD NEIGHBORS co-star Emily Hampshire appear in David Cronenberg’s latest, COSMOPOLIS. Can you talk about that and working for Cronenberg?
BARUCHEL: Again, this is a movie that I agreed to do without knowing what I’d be doing in it. I was sort of just keeping my fiancée [Allison Pill] company in Manhattan while she was doing her play. My greatest ambition was to just write horror. And that’s been picking up after my work on [co-writing] GOON. My writing partner [Jesse Chabot] and I got hired on a couple of things, and so on-camera acting was the furthest thing from my mind this year. And then they said, “You want to go to Toronto and do two days on the new David Cronenberg?” I said, “I’ll pick up that man’s f**king dry cleaning.” I’ll do anything to meet him. He’s one of my original heroes. For a Canadian who wants to make horror movies for the rest of his life, there’s no greater hero or no more important figure than David Cronenberg. It was a very, very easy “yes” for me. And showing up there, once I got past the initial butterflies in my stomach and the jitters of not only getting to meet one of my heroes, but getting to work with him, that took some getting through because I was flabbergasted. Here I am, getting to watch him do his thing, in his environment. But once I was past that, it was the easiest job I’ve ever had. It was simple and fun and exciting and I could retire tomorrow because I’m in one of his flicks now.
FANG: Who do you play in COSMOPOLIS?
BARUCHEL: The thing is incredibly dense and ethereal and mostly it’s just dialogue heavy. It takes place in the early 2000s during a version of the dotcom boom. It follows Robert Pattinson’s character, who’s the CEO of one of these tech companies, and he’s on his way to work and he’s trying to get a haircut and that’s the movie. And 90 percent of it takes place in his limo en route to get a haircut. He has all these different meetings with people he works alongside, and they come in to the limo, he has a long, sort of philosophical conversation with them and they get out, they exchange seats, and I’m the first guy he picks up. I’m the guy who started the company with him, and I’m a young, rich, upwardly mobile tech head. We have a four-page long existential scene about the nature of 20th-century living and then I disappear. It was the most satisfying, interesting, exciting and every adjective in the book. It really, really nourished me. I know I’m a better actor, a better writer and a better person for it.
Jay Baruchel has joined Robert Pattinson in the David Cronenberg-directed Cosmopolis. Pattinson plays a a financial wiz kid who puts his life in danger by betting his entire fortune against the yen on a tumultous day in the adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel. Baruchel plays the shy guy who founded the company, and who acts as the trader’s conscience. Samantha Morton, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Amalric and Sarah Gadon also star. Baruchel just wrapped Goon, which he cowrote with Evan Goldberg, and starred in and produced. He’s repped by CAA and Thruline…
