Robert Pattinson shines in a roll very different to Twilight

I HAD no idea what to expect from Remember Me.
I thought maybe a dark version of a Nicholas Sparks type story.

And in that respect, I suppose, I was close – but it was nothing at all like what I expected as this is a film that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

Tyler (Robert Pattinson) is a bit of a rebel, still coping with his older brother’s suicide several years earlier, he has a tense relationship with his dad (a rather snotty Pierce Brosnan), and a very close relationship with his little sister Caroline (Ruby Jerins).

When Tyler and his best friend and roommate Aidan (Tate Ellington) try to break up a fight, they end up getting arrested and Tyler gets beaten up by one of the policemen.

Later Aidan sets up Tyler with the policeman’s daughter Ally (Emilie de Ravin) in order to get back at the copper who attacked him.

But Ally is struggling with a tragedy as well, and the two become drawn to each other in a series of really endearing moments.

The ending – which I won’t even hint at – came as a complete surprise to me.

I was sat watching the film, and enjoying it nonetheless, when I found myself thinking, how can this end?

And then it did – and I was utterly shocked, and saddened.

You really have to watch the film to see what I mean, but it will be both sad and uplifting at the same time.

Remember Me Review – No Spoilers   Leave a comment

I felt like a kid at Christmas in anticipation of Robert Pattinson’s performance as Tyler Hawkins in Remember Me.

Remember Me is a love story. I won’t lie to you – it is what it is. The good thing about this film is that it’s not just a predictable love story as there’s a rather dramatic twist.

There has to be really. It must be called Remember Me for a reason.

At the beginning of the film, we see Ally (Lost’s Emilie de Ravin) as an 11-year-old witnessing her mother’s murder. Later we find out that Tyler (Twilight’s Robert Pattinson) found his older brother after he had committed suicide.

Both Ally and Tyler have had heart-breaking lives through their own family tragedies. They are both lost souls, taking each day as it comes, until they meet each other.

You may be left thinking that this is an ordinary boy-meets-girl film but there is so much more. The dramatic climax includes a memorable event.

Remember Me will have you both smiling and crying in equal measure.

Remember me

Director: Allen Coulter
Writer: Will Fetters

I,  like most people enjoyed Twilight, and I’m not ashamed to say that.  I did go into this thinking it would be another half decent indie film about relationships love and family. I was, however,  pleasantly surprised watching the film.

Remember Me is about Tyler Hawkins (Rob Pattinson) a 21 year old guy living in New York, who doesn’t really see eye to eye with his father and is philosophically advanced than most his age. We see him deal with his pain and struggle and see him help people, in doing so gets him and his roommate arrested.

As the story continues we see his relationship with Ally grow, Ally played my Emilie De Ravin. Ally’s story is told at the beginning and without giving too much away she is dealing with some of her own traumatic issues. Her relationship with her father is pretty close, but a drunken night spent at Tyler’s gets her in trouble and she moves out.
For me. the relationship between Tyler and his father played by Pierce Brosnan was amazing; the boardroom scene was gripping, and for a moment I was mesmerised by what was going on. But the one who stole the film for me was Tyler’s little sister Caroline, we see her dealing with her own issues of being different and troubled at such a young age, for her performance alone would recommend going to see it.
Finally, the ending. If you pay close attention throughout the entire film you might just see it coming, however I was so captivated by the story I did not, so it hit me when you see what happens. There were subtle hints though; the eerie music which did foreshadow what was going to happen. I was happy it wasn’t a clichéd ending which at one point thought it was heading towards. It was better much better.

Overall I would say its worth going to watch, decent and enjoyable, great story and a wonderful cast.

8/10

EF was fortunate enough to be invited along to the premiere of Robert Pattinson’s latest drama Remember Me, which is released in cinemas today. We caught up with Robert, his co-star Emilie de Ravin and one of the film’s producers Nick Osborne as they discussed the making of one of this year’s finest films.

Robert Pattinson had been looking for a new direction between Twilight sequels and literally read hundreds of scripts before picking Remember Me. He liked the naturalistic dialogue of the story and how the story dealt with grief. He also noted that this character starts and ends the movie as pretty much the same guy- it was a young part devoid of the usual Hollywood transitions when everything ties up nicely at the end. He joked that he doesn’t really like anything so picking a next project was easy. He clearly isn’t driven by money either so when the opportunity for Remember Me came along, he knew it was the right project. Robert also feels like these types of movies aren’t around very much today and saw a gap in the market to do such a narrative.

When asked if he feels that Tyler and Edward Cullen are similar brooding characters, he thinks that Tyler isn’t very broken or damaged at all, at least not how he saw him. He never felt that Tyler was brooding and that’s probably why Pattinson’s performance is so convincing here – it’s a character with no sense of pretention even though Robert admitted to liking Tyler’s audacity. Robert feels that the success of Twilight and indeed Lost will give Remember Me some publicity that will hopefully attract a bigger audience to the drama. I feel that it’s because of his other successes that Pattinson can take on roles like this and in many respects get a movie made that may struggle without his pulling-power. Remember Me also goes a long way to showcase Robert Pattinson as a serious actor and one that will have career longevity past The Twilight Saga.

On his co-stars, Robert loved the sense of humour and sarcasm of Emilie de Ravin. He also said that he finds her very funny when she doesn’t mean to be funny! This got a wry look off Emilie! He also joked that she can hold her drink and when they went out after the audition she downed something like 24 beers and still was stone-cold sober! Robert was genuinely chuffed at the chance to work alongside former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan too. He never thought that they would be able to get him to play the part of Charles Hawkins and according to Robert, Pierce managed to change the dynamic of his character with his natural charisma. He also loved working alongside Ruby Jerins who plays Tyler’s sister Caroline. Their relationship is a strong reason to why the film works so well. Robert said that Ruby could improvise with him for hours and acting came very easy to her. He also said that he has always wanted a younger sibling.

Emilie de Ravin has been a familiar face to thousands of viewers on Lost and Roswell. Remember Me finds her starring opposite the hottest young actor in Hollywood today and marks her first major leading role. Emilie was genuinely surprised at the turn out for the London premiere which found hordes of fans waiting for days to catch a glimpse of the cast. She said that the films script didn’t actually feel like a script thanks to its honesty and organic feel. She was also surprised to learn that Robert acted as executive-producer on Remember Me too. On her co-stars, Emilie cites Chris Cooper as a very giving actor who was a joy to work alongside. Her New-York accent is brilliant in the film and she admitted that it was important to get right as it adds layers of the character of Ally. When asked about the end of Lost, Emilie said that she felt bittersweet about it all even though it has been an amazing ride to take. Nevertheless she is feeling positive about the future and the projects that will hopefully come her way. She doesn’t want to pigeon-hole herself as an actress and she is well aware that you can’t please every fan which highlights the importance of always doing something challenging.

Co-producer Nick Osborne told us that Remember Me is a project which has been in development for the better part of 4 years. He, like Robert Pattinson, wanted the project to handle in a certain way and consulted with its star frequently. An element of the script that appealed to him was the story of a young man who wasn’t clued-up from the get-go but someone that finds what he wants throughout the story. He also told us a funny story about the Robert and Chris Cooper fight scene. Robert joked that he is too scared to get into real fights as people would like to kill him just because of who he is! Nick Osborne said that as Robert was preparing for the scene he turned around and saw Chris Cooper doing press-ups and felt genuine fear for Robert! He didn’t envy him that day. Robert also said that when he was filming the scene he was required to actually punch the stunt-man. He was told that he has a very weak punch which he said was an ego-deflator!

The press conference drew on some light-hearted general questions towards the end too. Robert feels that his natural accent isn’t quite regarded as London anymore and that he had an idea of Tyler’s accent from when he initially read the script. This voice never changed for him and that’s what we hear in the movie. I for one think his American accent is flawless and a few actors could take notes on Pattinson’s performance in Remember Me. Robert stated that he doesn’t really have any heroes outside of his family, who are his inspiration as are his friends. He also said that he is lucky to have a circle of friends who have grown up with him. He also feels genuine surprise when people regard him as a hero.

Then the press conference ended with a funny but bizarre question – what was Robert and Emilie’s favourite biscuit?! Emilie mentioned an Australian brand that no-one seemed to have heard of whilst Robert said that he was in America once and tried Chicken and Biscuits. He thought “why would they want to eat chicken with biscuits?!” But of course, in the States, biscuits are more like muffins and after he tried it he thought it was really nice! He said that the experience changed his opinion on what can be defined as a biscuit but if he had to pick a traditional biscuit it would be a Hob-nob!

Remember Me opens in cinemas today and I urge you all to catch it – its Robert Pattinson’s finest work to date.

The Northerner, an independent student newspaper at the Northern Kentucky University, reviewed Remember Me:

Pattinson proves more than a vampire

Remember Me lets actor break the mold

Remember Me is the tale of two young adults looking to find their way in life, yet forever haunted by the deaths in their past. For Ally, she lost her mom to murder and Tyler was forced to say goodbye to his brother who took his own life. In a bet, the two wind up together but like most coming-of-age classics they end up truly falling in love. What makes this movie particularly interesting and unique is due in large part to the twist ending that you have to see the movie to find out about.

Robert Pattinson might be known for his portrayal of the Twilight saga’s brooding vampire, Edward Cullen, and even though you do see a lot of that Rob in this film, this is breakaway film for him. Pattinson’s portrayal of Tyler Hawkins is an intense, yet realistic, look at a guy who finds trouble when he only wants to help. He loves his little sister and would risk jail to help her, he believes his father (played exceptionally well by Pierce Brosnan) needs to open his eyes and realize how his actions are affecting his kids before the rest end up like Rob’s suicidal brother. Most of all, Rob loves a girl that might truly understand him.

A lot of this story revolves around Tyler and his world, but Ally (Emilie de Ravin) is just as important and the movie actually begins with a scene about her ten years prior to the main story.  Just like Tyler, Ally is looking to make things right for those she loves and to find her in way in life. Remember Me is truly a coming of age tale, but not just for the two main stars. Brosnan’s character must decide to either make a radical change in his life or lose his kids forever, while Tyler’s sister, Caroline (Ruby Jerins), has her own troubles to work out at the young age of 11.

Remember Me is Ally’s story. Remember Me is Tyler’s story.

Post-Movie Coffee: Remember Me ***Spoiler Warning***   8 comments

***Spoiler Warning***

The idea for this series has been swimming around in my head for a while, but it never insisted on hitting the written page until now. Last week, Robert Pattinson’s Remember Me hit the screen. Before its release, public concern focused on how Pattinson would deal with a mainstream starring role that didn’t have him grimacing every time the tasty-smelling Bella Swan walked by. Once people saw the film and its controversial ending, however, the dialogue flipped. In what has to be one of the lowest scores for a decent movie, the film has suffered a 26% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, with critiques flinging words like ridiculous, manipulative, overwrought, shamelessly exploitative, insignificant, trivializing, vile, cheap, and unforgivable.

And for the first time in a very long time, I completely disagree with popular critical opinion.

Remember Me Review: Pattinson Proves He’s More Than a Vamp   3 comments

Robert Pattinson’s new flick “Remember Me” is a surprisingly dark, compelling and moving story of a boy and a girl spending the summer falling in love in New York City. It had a phenomenal storyline, decent acting from all angles and gigantic plot twists that I didn’t see coming.
