Riley is a hardworking English actress best known to younger audiences as one of the loveable miscreants in the St. Trinianâs film series, Pirate Radio and TVâs Dr. Who. The 24-year-oldâs career is on a pretty intense international upswing thanks to an appearance opposite Twilightâs Robert Pattinson in the iTunes original short The Summer House and a part in a little something called Inception.
Letâs start with The Summer House. Riley is a beautiful but reserved English girl who decides to spend the summer of 1969 in a friendâs French estate to recover from a broken heart, when out of the bushes comes Pattinson. The Summer House packs a lot of heat into just a few minutes.
Monsters and Critics – There are just 12 minutes to get to know Jane in Summer House. But you made her a dimensional person â how?
Talulah Riley – Daisy spent a lot of time with Rob and me discussing the back-story, so we were aware of our characters situations and the decisions theyâd made to get them to the point where the audience meets them, in the film. Action is character, as they say, so just knowing that my character was the type of girl who would have to run away to France to get over a break-up, gave me a good place to start.
M&C – How did you get to âknowâ her? What did you work on to determine what was she like, and what she thought, who she was?
TR – I was lucky enough to be given a copy of the book The Summer House, by the writer Ian Beck. This really helped me with the characterization. Prose is good for filling in the details â especially when there is very little dialogue.
M&C â The Summer House is set in the free love era. How free was Jane?
TR – Although the film is set in the Swinging 60âs, Jane isnât really that into free love. Sheâs more of a true romantic â idealistic, gentle, loyal, and intensely hurt by her loverâs betrayal.
M&C – Your Summer House lover, Robert Pattinson has been struck by a movie supernova. Did you work together during or before Twilight?
TR – I worked with Rob before Twilight. Iâm very happy for his success. It couldnât have happened to a nicer guy. Heâs a lovely actor and a lovely friend.
M&C – Is he a good kisser? Neck nuzzler?
TR – Heâs a very good neck nuzzler.

Robert Pattinsonâs 2008 short film, âThe Summer Houseâ dominated iTunes immediately following its recent release, topping movie sales charts in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and Germany after a mere four hours. The July 13th iTunes release marked the first occasion on which the film had been distributed for mass consumption, having only been run on the festival circuit during the prior year.
The film is an adaptation of a coming-of-age story in which a teenage girl (Jane) summering at an auntâs chateau in rural France discovers the complexity of romantic relationshipsâboth those of certain family members, as well as her own. Rob plays the role of 18-year-old Richard, the love interest of Jane. Having broken up with her to date another woman prior to her departure for the summer, once dumped by the other, he appears unexpectedly at Janeâs retreat to win her back. Through a series of benign advances (e.g., love letters) and other more forceful attempts, he pushes Jane to come farther into herself.
Having been shot just prior to the release of âTwilightâ, âThe Summer Houseâ will be regarded as one of Pattinsonâs early works, though by the time he played in âThe Summer Houseâ, Pattinson had already acted in other major Hollywood films. The release comes just in time for fans craving more of the international mega-star, whose media exposure has fallen off sharply since the release of âThe Twilight Saga: Eclipseâ.
You can get The Summer House on iTunes here.
The Summer House will be released in the UK on a DVD titled “Love and Mistrust”. Robert Pattinson UK received confirmation from Metrodome Distribution who is in charge of the distribution of the DVD.
The DVD will be out in the UK on August 16th and can be pre-ordered on Amazon UK here.
No word yet if it will be available in the US or any other country.
‘The Summerhouse’ starring Robert Pattinson has made it in as an official selection to be screened at the Rushes Soho Short Film Festival. The festival runs from July 21st – 31st.
The short films will be screened on 7/21, 7/24 & 7/28. Â Tickets go on sale June 16, click here for ticket details.
