Gadon and Pattinson did not rehearse, the idea being that their unfamiliarity would work to their advantage given the unfamiliarity of their characters. That said, I ask what she thinks Pattinson is really good at.
“Um, what is Rob really good at?” She chuckles. “He’s good at a lot of things! I think he was really great as Eric Packer. And I think that was one thing that kind of surprised me, because I didn’t really know him very well. And in real life he’s very kind of… I mean, you heard him in the press conference: he’s British and he’s self-deprecating and he’s much more self-conscious [than his character].
“And then all of a sudden he put on his suit, and this American accent would come out, and he would be so sure of himself and so powerful! And direct! And it was amazing to me to see that transformation of going from himself into Eric Packer. And I think that there’s few, few guys right now in the industry who can pull off that kind of powerful masculinity at such a young age.”
On getting scolded for off-screen antics with Robert Pattinson:
“Me and Rob got into a lot of trouble. We were getting notes from the studio. They wanted me to smile all the time. They wanted Rob to be not so brooding. We were like, ‘No! You need to brood your a– off.’”
Robert Pattinson on Stewart’s passion for fashion:
“I never saw that coming.”
“The perception of her is that she’s ‘awkward,’” Rob admits. “But it’s funny knowing her. It’s the absolute opposite of what people think. She’s insanely confident.”
On top of battling personal reluctance, Stewart also struggles with the public’s preconceived notions about her personality. “People have decided how they are going to perceive her,” Robert Pattinson tells V.F. of Stewart. “No matter how many times she smiles, they’ll put in the one picture where she’s not smiling.”
There were a few actors still in the running for the part of Edward, and Hardwicke was smart enough to involve Stewart in the final decision-making. “Chemistry reads” are a long-standing ritual for testing whether two actors will work well together on-screen, but it sounds as if Hardwicke was experimenting with explosives the day she had Pattinson, a young British actor then best known for playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire, show up at her house to run through some scenes with Stewart, in the bedroom no less. “Honestly I was nervous,” the director remembers. “I saw they were so attracted and Kristen was under-age. I said, ‘Rob, we have a law in this country under 18. Don’t get in trouble here.‘ I felt I was in the presence of something strong and powerful.” When Pattinson left, Stewart said, “It’s him.” Hardwicke listened but wanted to make sure that their charisma and visceral connection translated onto film. “Not everybody makes it all the way through the screen to our hearts and souls in the movie theater,” the director says, “but these two did. It was electrifying.”
As you may know, her offscreen relationship with Pattinson has drawn enormous attention, but she is publicly mum on this one. That the two are a couple is not something they seem to want to hide; it’s just that they like their privacy. A friend who knows Stewart very well says, “This is something that she wants to keep for herself.”
Sure there have been car movies in the past. But there has never been a movie that has taken place almost entirely inside of a car. Until now.
Enter Cosmopolis, David Cronenberg’s surreal look at the world of finance — set in the back of a stretch white limousine winding it’s way through the crowded streets of New York City.
Robert Pattinson, who spends nearly every scene of the movie in the plush back seat, says even he was surprised by how much took place in the back in the limited environment.
“When I saw the script, about 70% of it was in the limo,” Pattinson tells USA TODAY. “But as we were shooting, (Cronenberg) kept adding even more scenes. I started feeling like it was (the German U-boat classic) Das Boat, like we were stuck in this weird submarine movie.”
Even Pattinson’s communication with Cronenberg was through the limousine’s intercom from inside this sealed world. Meanwhile, the back of the limo serves as the stage for some crazy stuff, street riots and the like. In one scene Pattinson’s banker character actually seduces the lovely French actress Juliet Binoche. Naturally the sex scene takes place in the tight back seat, which led to some comical moments for Pattinson.
“There’s not enough space to really do it,” he says. “So she’s banging her head on the ceiling. It ended up being kind of funny. But its supposed to be kind of erotic.”
But the most bizarre scene, and no doubt another movie first, is another seduction moment.
“There’s a scene where I am having to seduce (a woman) while being completely naked having a prostate exam in the back of the limousine,” laughs Pattinson. “They don’t really see it that very often in movies.”
After filming Cosmopolis right here in Toronto, RPatz has brought his entire crew back to T Dot for the Canadian premiere tonight! Well, everyone except his girlfriend Kristen Stewart that is (darn!)
But he did tell ET Canada‘s Roz Weston today he was excited about winning MTV’s Best Kiss Award, which Kristen picked up for both of them last night in LA.
“It’s nice that it’s been quite a few times,” he says of the trophy. “I would be disappointed if it wasn’t, then I would know it’s all rigged.”
Cosmopolis is of course a far cry from Twilight – and the actor wasn’t convinced at first… but thankfully everyone else around him was: “It took about 40 people to tell me I am being an idiot for not doing it… I got so many people to read the script.”
And Twihards, here is an interesting fact: Rob goes on the fan sites to see what you think of his movies, so be kind!
“I think Reese Witherspoon said when you are feeling good about yourself you don’t look at it, when you feel bad you look at it to make yourself feel worse,” Rob reveals.
Facing roles in David Cronenberg’s new film Cosmopolis, actors Robert Pattinson and Paul Giamatti said they felt terror and intimidation at the daunting project.
A critique of capitalism and the financial industry, Cronenberg’s film draws dialogue and lengthy exchanges straight from the 2003 Don DeLillo novel that inspired it.
Rob is here and we have a very specific question to ask him.
Are you and kristen Stewart dating? Is it official?
Rob: I only answer questions about movies ’cause I’m not an idiot.
The vampire is stubborn, or should I say the businessman with sharp teeth since it’s the role he plays in Cronenberg’s new movie. A role that’s compleltely different from the one in Twilight.
Rob: It’s a different audience, a different everything. But, I mean, I like to try to, in every movie between Twilight to try to change everything I can and this one seems to be connected in some way. Cool. Thanks a lot.
