Robert Pattinson: come è noiosa l’immortalità

Mentre sembra tornare il sereno con Kristen Stewart (li avete visti insieme su Mtv?), sta per arrivare al cinema l’ultimo capitolo della saga di Twilight. Dove il ragazzo più desiderato al mondo smetterà di avere 17 anni per sempre. Dicendo addio a Edward Cullen, il vampiro

E lui forse in qualche modo è riuscito a superare l’umiliazione planetaria che lei gli ha inflitto con una certa disinvoltura. Chissà. Di certo c’è solo che l’argomento nelle interviste è off limits. Per Kristen, che a domanda diretta ha risposto che «la gente può continuare a farsi i suoi film sulle loro vite». Ma anche per Pattinson, che ora mi siede davanti, volto angelico e aria finto-trasandata: il ragazzo più desiderato al mondo, il vampiro fermo alla magica età di 17 anni di Twilight.

Anche lei vorrebbe non invecchiare mai?
Neanche per sogno, anzi, sono prontissimo a farlo. E nel mentre che invecchio ci tengo a sperimentare un tipo di cinema diverso. Non voglio restare per sempreEdward Cullen.

Pattinson prima di diventare attore.
Sono cresciuto a Barnes, un sobborgo di Londra. Mia madre Clare lavorava per un’agenzia di modelle, mio padre Richard ha sempre venduto macchine d’epoca. Siamo una famiglia molto unita, e i miei mi hanno sostenuto, anche quando come attore nessuno mi dava lavoro.

Dopo il liceo – frequentato insieme a James Jagger, il figlio di Mick dei Rolling Stones – si dice volesse fare politica…
Mi sarebbe piaciuto scrivere discorsi per il presidente, volevo studiare relazioni internazionali… Poi però mi hanno dato il ruolo di Cedric Diggory, in Harry Potter e il calice di fuoco… Ed è arrivato Twilight.

Nell’ultimo capitolo Edward, finalmente è sposato e ha una bambina.
È come rinato. Bella, come vampira, ha qualità straordinarie, imprevedibili. Edwardha finalmente trovato la propria compagna, ha ricominciato ad apprezzare la particolarità del suo stile di vita.

E lei, potremmo definirla un gentiluomo alla Edward?
Le dico solo che ho due sorelle maggiori, sono cresciuto coccolato da donne, non ho mai fatto sport, preferivo leggere. Di certo ho un animo sensibile, da poeta. E sono timidissimo, al punto che a 15 anni misi un fiore nell’armadietto di Maria, una ragazza che adoravo. Siccome non mi decidevo a dirle che ero stato io, un mio compagno di classe le fece credere di averlo fatto lui. Non ho mai detto niente, ma ho imparato la lezione.

Come decide di diventare attore un ragazzo così timido?
Ero con mio padre al ristorante: di fianco a noi si siede un gruppo di ragazze, tutte molto carine. Mio padre inizia a chiacchierare e scopre che appartengono a un gruppo di recitazione, e così mi convince che dovrei far parte di quel club, anche solo per riuscire a uscire con una di quelle ragazze. Non uscii mai con nessuna, ma dopo la prima recita trovai il mio agente.

È vero il suo attore preferito è Jack Nicholson?
Amo tutto di Jack! A 13 anni vidi Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo e mi innamorai così intensamente della sua personalità da iniziare a vestirmi e a parlare come lui. Sono cresciuto guardando film americani e tutti i miei attori preferiti sono americani. Durante le mie prime audizioni negli Stati Uniti provavo sempre accenti stranissimi, mi intrigavano quelli un po’ mafiosi del New Jersey. Quando scoprivano che ero inglese non mi davano la parte: temevano che non sarei riuscito a recitare un film intero mantenendo l’accento!

Come si sceglie il ruolo perfetto?
Non sbagliare un colpo riesce solo a Leonardo Di Caprio, Mark Wahlberg o Tom Cruise: le vere movie star! Per tutti gli altri fare l’attore resta un mestiere imprevedibile. Per me il ruolo ideale è quello che nessuno ha il coraggio di accettare.

Nella sua vita, però, non c’è solo il cinema: è vero che ha sempre un libro in mano?
Leggo molto, ma cerco di non avere sempre un libro in mano! Quando non leggo, vado al cinema, anche se ora è diventato più difficile perché mi riconoscono. Ho imparato molto da Jean-Luc Godard, e sono ispirato dalla poesia di molti film giapponesi, soprattutto quelli di Yasujir Ozu, uno dei miei registi preferiti.

Tra i suoi mille talenti c’è anche quello per la musica.
La forma più pura di libertà! Mia sorella Lizzy è stata la prima a incoraggiarmi. Ho sempre desiderato suonare il piano nei locali della Costa Azzurra… ricordo un uomo incontrato durante una vacanza nel sud della Francia: suonava Serge Gainsbourg in un tuxedo consumato. Era trasandato, con vari bicchieri di whisky sul piano.Un’immagine romantica.

La musica preferita?
Ascolto molto blues. E suono piano e chitarra: il piano è un’estensione delle mie dita, lo studio da quando avevo tre anni.

Che rapporto ha con il cibo?
Sono un mangiatore compulsivo, da vecchio sarò grassissimo, come Orson Welles. Quando leggo le sceneggiature sono talmente nervoso che mi mangio intere confezioni M&M’s alle mandorle.

Guarda mai i suoi film?
Spesso. Per curiosità, per capire se posso fare meglio. La maggior parte delle volte mi vedo come uno che non ha idea di quel che sta facendo. Non capisco gli attori che si presentano sul set e sono sempre pronti. Io, spesso, nonostante mi prepari, non ho la minima idea di quello che succederà. almeno finché non inizio a recitare.

Ama il suo lavoro?
È il più bello del mondo. Mi spiace solo di non aver iniziato prima, di non aver avuto il fuoco sacro della recitazione sin da quando ero bambino.

Eppure ha iniziato molto giovane…
È vero, ma quando vedo Kristen sul set mi rendo conto di quanto sia molto più preparata, di come riesca a interpretare i suoi personaggi a un livello molto più profondo del mio. Lei legge una parte ed è già pronta, io non sono mai sicuro in niente.

Come si immagina a 90 anni?
Davanti a un tramonto in un posto esotico, con un libro e una tazza di tè. Seduto accanto a mia moglie.

I’m really shy at the point that when I was 15 I put a flower in the closet of Maria, a girl that I loved. Since I’ve never took the decision to say the truth to her, a classmate make believe her what it was him. I’ve never said anything but I’ve learnt the lesson.

How a shy boy decides to be an actor?
I was with my father at the restaurant : some girls, all cute, are sit beside us. My father starts to chat with them and finds out that they are part of an acting group e so he convince me to part of that club, even only for dating one of that girls. I’ve never dated anyone but after my first recital I’ve found my agent.

It’s true that your favourite actor is Jack Nicholson?

I love everything of Jack! When I was 13 I’ve watched “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and I literally fall in love with his personality at the point that I’ve started to dress and talk like him. I’ve grew up watching American movies and all my favourite actors are American. During my first castings in the US I was always trying out weird accents, totally intrigued me the one from New Jersey mafia style. When they discovered that I was English they didn’t gave me the part: they were afraid that I wasn’t able to act for the whole film keeping the accent!

How is possible to choose the perfect role?

To never get wrong happens only to Leonardo Di Caprio, Mark Wahlberg or Tom Cruise : the true movie stars! For the others being an actor remains a unpredictable profession. For me the ideal role is the one that nobody has the bravery to accept it.

In your life, though, there isn’t only the cinema : is true that you have always in your hands a book?
I read a lot but I’m trying not to have always a book in my hands! When I don’t read, I go to movies, also if it become more difficult because they recognize me. I’ve learnt a lot from Jean-Luc Godard and I took inspiration from the poetry of many Japanese films, especially Yasujir Ozu’s, one my favourite directors.

Between your countless talents there’s the one for the music.
The most pure form of liberty! My sister Lizzy was the first to encourage me. I’ve always wished to play the piano in the clubs in the Côte d’Azur … I remember a man that I’ve met during my holidays in the South of the France : he was playing Serge Gainsbourg in a worn tuxedo. He was sloppy, with various glasses of whisky on the piano. A romantic scenario.

Preferite Music?
I listen to a lot of blues. And I play piano and guitar : the piano is an extension of my fingers, I study it since I was three years old.

What is your relationship with the food?
I’m a compulsive eater when I’ll be old I’ll be really fat like Orson Welles. When I read the scripts I’m so nervous that I eat entire packs of M&M’s with almonds.

You never watch your films?
Often. For curiosity, for understand if I can improve. Most of the times I see myself like the one that hasn’t the idea of what he’s doing. I don’t understand the actors that come on the set and are always ready. I, frequently, despite the preparation, haven’t the slightest idea of what might happen, until I don’t start to act.

Do you love your job?

Is the most beautiful job in the world. I’m so sorry that I’ haven’t start before, to not have the passion for acting since I was a child.

Yet your started so young…

Is true, but I when I see Kristen on the set I realize how much she’s prepared, of how is capable of interpret her characters in a more deeper level than me. She reads a part and she’s already set to go instead I’m never sure in anything.

How do imagine yourself when you’re 90?

In front of a sunset in a exotic place, with a book and a cup of tea. Sitting beside my wife.
