Ethan Hawke Mentions Robert Pattinson   9 comments

We have no idea who this “Robert Pattinson” guy is. Now, Bob Pattinson on the other hand….

Over drinks at a bistro in the Maritime Hotel, however, we’re not talking about Stoppard or Shepard or Mendes or Lumet. We’re talking about Zac Efron. Hawke and Linklater are close friends, and Linklater’s latest film, Me and Orson Welles, released in November, stars the unknown British actor Christian McKay as Welles, and the very well-known Efron—who became famous in High School Musical—as Welles’s young protégé. And herein lies a dilemma.
“The irony is, from Rick’s point of view, he wants to make a period film. He wants McKay to play Orson Welles. So you need a star to be in it somewhere,” Hawke says. “Here’s the answer: We’ll get Zac Efron to play the young kid. Because they audition him, and you know what? He turns out to be a really good actor. So that’s the reason Rick gets the money to make the film. But that’s also the reason people struggle to take the movie seriously.” This is a predicament that Hawke knows all too well. “A part of my heart goes out for these guys like Zac or [Twilight’s] Bob Pattinson. I wish them well,” he says. “The world is very mysterious. It has the appearance that it’s rooting for them and giving them everything they want. Instead, it’s setting a huge trap. And it’s very difficult to get out of.”

  1. lol Bob lol lol lol

  2. When one makes a deal with the devil to get rich quick, there’s certain to be some strings attached. I don’t know why actors seem so surprised that they might get recognized when they go out…Hello you put yourself out there!!!! If you didnt want fame why didnt you become a trashman or something damn

  3. Everthing he says is true.

  4. TODOS LOS ACTORES ESTÁN UTILIZANDO EL NOMBRE DE ROBERT PATTINSON PARA DARSE PUBLICIDAD A ELLOS MISMOS. ROBERT TE QUIERO CON TODO MI CORAZÓN

  5. Ok, we all worship Robert Pattinson, but Ethan will always have a special spot on the hottest men in the world list! Can we forgive him the Bob mistake, I think so. 😉 Besides, he has been busy right, not under a rock, just busy.

  6. I would bet Robert (‘Bob’, hah) did not get into the business to ‘get rich quick’, as Happiness assumes. Also, everyone would have to agree that the sheer magnitude of the fame with which he has had to contend in such a short time is highly unusual; that being the case, the intense scrutiny Robert is subjected to is something you can be sure he did not count on, not this early in his career. Normally, it comes in increments and actors can absorb the impact gradually. But Robert hasn’t got that luxury.

Anyone who has listened to him knows that he is flabbergasted by the all-consuming attention. ‘Happiness’s attitude is in very poor taste; it is callous. Famous people do not all ‘make a deal with the devil’. There’s a big difference between Paris Hilton, who courts fame and the limelight, and Robert Pattinson, who might enjoy some of it, but who is trying to make a career for himself in creative fields, acting and music. I didn’t say make a ‘name’ for himself; I said ‘make a career’.

Oh sure, we all love accolades for our work. That’s called being human. And ‘Happiness’ can’t tell us that s/he wouldn’t either. But Robert is pretty smart, in that he is suspicious of the enormity of the attention he is now getting. I think he is well aware of the ‘huge trap’ Ethan Hawke is talking about and is afraid of it.

Robert is the most self-deprecating actor I’ve ever seen. To a fault, by the way. Perhaps he’s doing that to remind everyone he’s human, flawed, and that people shouldn’t raise him up, idolize him.

He’s been nominated for a Razzie for heaven’s sake. That’t more because the Razzies need a big name to, er, razz, and bears no reflection on Robert’s acting ability. It’s part of the game.

I don’t worship him or adore him, but I am stunned by his gorgeous, hot, incredible physical beauty, which comes along once in a lifetime. (He pretends he doesn’t see it, and for that I’d like to smack him–jokingly–because surely he’s looked in a mirror. If you see him in a photo or on film with anyone else (even movie stars), he’s a magnet, eclipses everyone else with his looks. (‘People’ magazine was just being obstinate by not making him their ‘sexiest man alive’; they know better.)

He knows looks alone won’t build a real career and he is frightened when we the people idolize him. As far as I can tell, he is a very grounded individual and hopefully that–along with his sweet sense of humour–will keep him real. I’m not sure the exact nature of the trap Ethan was talking about, but part of it, surely, is if the actor is drawn in by the hype about himself. If Robert ever believes he is an idol, an ‘icon’, he is doomed in a most fundamental way.

  7. Um in response to Danielle. You said you don’t worship him, or adore him yet your on his fan page writing a 6 paragraph report about him. I almost thought you were his mother lol until you started talking about how hot he is. Yes, Rob is cute and very talented but I can’t bring myself to feel sorry for him when there are people who have far less in the world……

  8. p.s. BITE ME!!!!!

  9. Okay, and spit you out.
