An eminent film critic has just told me he thinks some of the best writing is now on the small screen, not the large one, and he may well be right. For all its Spielbergian glory, War Horse has a baggy, pedestrian script and can’t add much to the National’s production. Still, there are signs of intellectual life in the cinema in 2012: the best-written upcoming movie I’ve seen is the riveting romp of Bel Ami, with Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas in Maupassant’s masterpiece.
Again, it succeeds because the original work is both sexy and clever: a plot turning on multifarious adultery, secret plans to invade Morocco and the power of the 1880s press. And, yes, of course we like to watch Uma in a velvet frock-coat, bewitching the arriviste Robert Pattinson as Georges: but we do have to keep half an eye on the machinations of the proprietors and French intentions in Africa to fully enjoy it.

Pattinson tackles three literary heroes in 2012: Guy de Maupassant’s manipulative Parisian in the period drama “Bel Ami,” Don DeLillo’s shallow Manhattan billionaire in “Cosmopolis” and — of course — Stephenie Meyer’s eternally young vampire in love, Edward Cullen, in the final “Twilight.”
He may be the co-star in her latest movie but that didn’t stop Uma Thurman from being upfront about Robert Pattinson.
The 41-year-old actress was obviously expecting a question about the Twilight star when she appeared in this month’s Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine – and she was certainly ready to answer it.
‘To answer the ubiquitous question about this movie, yes, Robert is good-looking in person, but he doesn’t have that diamond-sparkle skin like in those Dracula movies,’ she said.
The mother-of-two was of course referring to upcoming film Bel Ami in which she plays Pattinson’s secret love interest.
As she draped herself across a velvet sofa in an array of designer dresses, Thurman went on to say that she enjoyed the role very much.
‘It was a fun character, a nice, meaty, dramatic role, and who doesn’t love an excuse to wear a corset?’ she told the monthly publication.
But before she could change the subject, she had one more thing to say about Pattinson: ‘He’s a very disciplined, very serious, very ambitious, very organised actor.’
