Anton Corbijn talks about LIFE and Robert Pattinson in an interview with ‘Dazed’   Leave a comment

Anton Corbijn talks about LIFE and Robert Pattinson with ‘Dazed’ magazine

DaneRob untagged

In your films you’ve portrayed talented men who burn out young – Ian Curtis in Control, and now James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock. Are you interested in the myth-making process that happens around these guys?

Anton Corbijn: If anything, it’s unmasking because I always bring it down to very normal life. In photography I can imagine that people think I make images iconic, but with films I don’t think that’s the case. The film with James Dean is actually about the photographer. He’s the lead role, they just share screen time. I had a similar experience when I was young in Holland. I became the photographer of somebody who became the biggest rock star we ever had there (Herman Brood), so it was interesting to see how that balance works when I thought I was helping him and he probably thought he was helping me. It’s the same with this story.

Was it an easy process casting Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan in your upcoming film Life?

Anton Corbijn: Dane didn’t want to take a meeting with me initially, as he couldn’t see himself in James Dean’s shoes. But he was persuaded by a mutual friend, and said yes in the end. He’s fabulous, a very good actor. Rob was interested in the film because he really wants to prove himself and for me that was great for that role. If you look at the roles he’s taking on – like the ones withCronenberg – he really wants to do very different, non-mainstream films and get out of that pigeonhole.

‘Life’ and Robert Pattinson in ‘Just Cinema’ – Italy   3 comments

just-cinema-october-2013-life

We know Anton Corbijn is an expert in portraying the stars. Famous are his pictures in black and white made for Joy Division, Tom Waits, Depeche Mode, U2, REM, Bryan Ferry, Rolling Stones, Nick Cave, and his movie he directed in 2007, Control, about life (and death) of Ian Curtis is famous too. The step from music to novie for him was short, as long as the theme is “cursed characters”, and here the Dutch filmmaker and photographer is back with a big project, a biopic of James Dean written by the poet & writer Luke Davies ( Candy, 2006), which tells us about the friendship forged between Dean and the photographer Dennis Stockin 1955 , before the actor became a star. The two had met during a party. Stock had understood the potential of Dean and, initially reluctant ,had agreed to go with him on a journey on the road to do a photoshoot payed by magazine ” Life Magazine ”. Dane DeHaan , already tested as actor with a “cursed” role in Kill your Darlings (2013 ) where he plays the journalist Lucien Carr, will be James Dean , and at his side in the role of Dennis Stockthere will be Robert Pattinson. The film’s producers said : ” Anton Corbijn, as a photographer of international renown, is the perfect choice to direct Life. Finding the right actor for the role of James Dean was a great responsibility, but the work of Dane has shown that he is a real changeable actor and that he can give so much to the part. The choice of Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan brings together two of the most interesting young actors of their generation

From ScreenDaily:

Robert Pattinson will star as Magnum photographer Dennis Stock and Dane DeHaan will play James Dean in Anton Corbijn’s Life. FilmNation handles international sales and will introduce the script to buyers in Toronto.

See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman produce with Christina Piovesan of First Generation Films, marking a post-The King’s Speech reunion between See-Saw and FilmNation. CAA holds US rights.

Luke Davies wrote the screenplay to Life, which chronicles the friendship that ensued when the straight-laced Stock embarked on a road trip with Dean in 1955 for a Life magazine commission.

Filming is scheduled to commence production in February 2014 on location in Canada.

“As an internationally celebrated photographer, Anton Corbijn is the perfect filmmaker to direct Life,” said Canning and Sherman. “Finding the right actor to play James Dean was a big responsibility, but Dane’s body of work has proved what a chameleon he is and what he will contribute to the role.

“Casting Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan brings together two of the most exciting young actors of their generation.”

“We were fortunate to work with Anton on A Most Wanted Man and are thrilled to be a part of his next film,” said FilmNation CEO Glen Basner. “His incredible talent combined with the chemistry between Dane and Robert will bring to life the fascinating story of the fast friendship formed at a very pivotal time in Dean’s life.

“The project also marks our re-teaming with See-Saw Films whose impressive track record continuously keeps them a top-player in international film production.”

Pattinson will next be see in David Michôd’s The Rover and starred in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis as well as the Twilight franchise. He recently wrapped on Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars .

DeHaan broke out in the sci-fi hit Chronicle and also stars in Toronto entries Devil’s Knot, Metallica Through The Never and Kill Your Darlings. His credits include The Place Beyond The Pines.

Is Robert Pattinson the next James Dean or Marlon Brando?   5 comments

Here is an article from The Improper:

Robert Pattinson has captured the hearts of an untold number of fans with his portrayal of Edward Cullen in “Twilight.”

Rob’s brooding good looks and the film, about eternal love and teen angst, are strikingly similar to two monumental teen idols from previous generations – James Dean and Marlon Brando – who starred in similar movies.

Every other generation or so, an actor comes along who captures the imagination of their contemporaries. Brando and Dean were those actors in the 1950s.

Rob is having the same breakout success as they did. Ironically, both Brando and Dean became international sensations in coming-of-age movies about teenage angst in tumultuous times.
