Robert Pattinson interview with Metro: says he was afraid that Cronenberg would take him for an impostor   1 comment

Metro has met Robert Pattinson on the eve of the film presentation.
Twilight in the cinema of David Cronenberg, there is a world. Cosmopolis is the beginning of a new career for you?Already be here with this film, it’s great. For a young actor like me, for people who truly love the cinema is the ultimate festival. One of the few who consider cinema as an art form. Here it is not about fame and everything that goes with it. Going back to my career, this is probably the beginning of something. Because Cosmopolis turn gave me the confidence to now get involved in projects that really interest me.

More after the jump!

You started in England but you have become famous through Hollywood. Do you think young American actors Cannes considering the same way as you?Maybe not … Until their film is selected (laughs). In the U.S., Cannes is not widely publicized, it’s more something talked about in professional circles. While in London, the festival is one of newspapers for two weeks. The weird thing here is all these people who you applaud at the end of the projection. I went to that of On the Road (Wednesday night – ed) and it hit me. In the U.S., people are leaving when the generic is! I asked David what would happen if we were whistled with Cosmopolis. Will we stand still for twenty minutes?(Laughs)
It seems you’re a fan of Cronenberg. Would you have signed for one of his movies without reading the script?Absolutely. As recently as last week, my agent asked me if I was ready to make the next film by David. And I said yes without thinking! (Laughs). That of Cosmopolis, however, I read it a year before I proposed and I found it excellent. Upon first reading, I felt a connection, it spoke to me, without me really knowing why.
Cronenberg does not do you rehearse and explains that he wanted to discover the meaning of the film by turning. It does not frighten you?But it is quite understandable because it is a very complicated scenario which can be interpreted in many different ways. David and I was actually very little about. We had a conversation very short, nothing more. So I remember sitting in my hotel room two weeks before the shooting, telling me: “My god! “. The first day I was terrified. We did camera tests. I sat in the limo, I had nothing to do … And I almost throw up! My heart was beating a hundred miles an hour, I was afraid that David turns to me, he takes me for an impostor. Except it was very relaxed. His team explained that the first week, he did not know very well what he was doing, but that was normal … He sought the meaning of the film! Once we found our rhythm, we went more quickly. At the end of filming, there was a decision for each scene. It was crazy. For the latest, we had four days of shooting planned. We did it in a day and a half.
What you posed the most problems? The very literary dialogues?Mostly, the film dialogues are not very good. Actors and turn them, it’s part of the job. There they were so good … The difficulty is that David had a tendency to change the program of the day depending on a particular technical barrier. This meant that I have the whole scenario in mind, every day, like a play. But it was fun because most of the time, when we go to the hotel after a shooting, there is not much to do. There, I had to dive back into the script every night.
And then the sex scenes? They are both very funny and very exciting …The more complicated was that with my bodyguard, played by Patricia McKenzie. At first we had to see us enjoy the beginning of the scene, and then discuss. Except that David suggested we talk while kissing! (Laughs).
And one where your doctor will examine the prostate?Five minutes before it turns, David told me “I want the bottom of your balls on top of the frame” (laughs). At that moment I saw myself saying I’d do anything for him. And I had to go to him and explain that it would not be possible. He took it very well. On arrival it is a very bizarre scene that you are not ready to see in a movie, I promise.

Don de Lillo wrote the book before September 11 and the financial crisis. Yet the characters in Cosmopolis have very current dilemmas. Have you made sure to make it as contemporary as possible? It was not voluntary. Except that a lot of things happened during the filming. As the Wall Street Occupy movement that broke out at the same time we were filming the scene of riots. And also since. Rupert Murdoch has taken a pie in the face, like my character! It’s funny because at first I did not see as Cosmopolis as a description of reality. Rather as a poem. This is how the book reads. And that makes it timeless. When criticism of finance, meanwhile virtual, because we could replace the dollar with rats and that it would not change anything … I agree completely. Personally, I never invested money in anything.Makes no sense, it happens in people’s heads …
Have you thought about a speech in case you remporteriez Best Actor?Absolutely not, no! I am terrified at the mere idea of going on stage. And make me boo!
This would be your first big reward …I still won the MTV Movie Award Best Kiss for Twilight. Three consecutive years!
Here you could immediately award the prize for best finger in the c …(He roars with laughter). It would be great, it would be a great price! To the best prostate stage in the history of cinema!
Your next film, it will be even with Cronenberg?I do not know exactly when we’re shooting. But this is the first time David will film on American soil. In Los Angeles specifically. It will talk about the film industry and I promise it will be very weird. Until then, I’ll do Mission: Black List, with French director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, who had Johnny Mad Dog. It will talk about the hunt for Saddam Hussein and we want to turn Iraq in Tikrit although it is complicated. But I’m 26, and this is the kind of thing that we must try. If someone has to do, it will be me!
