The Stir: “5 Ways Robert Pattinson Saved the MTV Movie Awards”   15 comments

From The Stir

Silent, smoldering type Robert Pattinson and his uncharacteristically crazy stunts single-handedly saved last night’s MTV Movie Awards from becoming a giant snore, and now I can’t wait to see more of Edward’s wild side! Not that I don’t love Pattinson’s sultry, wordless gaze or that sexy, long-suffering pout, but who knew this guy could give a boring awards show such a powerful shot of adrenaline? He’s funny, in a totally not-trying-to-be-funny way, has an air of unpredictability that’s just dangerous enough to keep us on the edge of our seats, and apparently has no qualms about kissing his male co-stars (read on!). These are my picks for Pattinson’s Top 5 MTV Award Show-Saving Moments:

1. RPatz drops the F-bomb on Reese Witherspoon. The presentation of a lifetime achievement award or, as MTV calls their version, the Generation Award, is usually beyond dull. But thanks to Pattinson’s endearing screw-ups, including flubbing jokes and laughing at his own inability to ad-lib as instructed by the teleprompter, Reese Witherspoon had quite the racy award-acceptance experience. Best part? The censors weren’t prepared when Pattinson wrapped up his anecdote about shootingWater for Elephants with Reese by saying, “But I did f–k you.” So the slip aired live!

2. Pattinson plants one on Taylor Lautner. Yeah, we were all soooo surprised when Robert and Kristen Stewart won for Best Kiss (again). But before we could even start to yawn, Pattinson declared he didn’t “feel like kissing” Stewart and dashed off the stage into the crowd to give a big sloppy kiss to “someone who would appreciate it more” — Taylor Lautner! Priceless.

3. Robert accidentally announces co-star’s pregnancy. When Pattinson, Xavier Samuel, and Bryce Dallas Howard (Victoria) stepped up to the mike to receive the award for Best Fight, it wasn’t immediately obvious that Dallas Howard is pregnant (empire waist dress, flowy fabric, you get the picture). Then Pattinson put the trio’s awkward banter to an end, responding to Dallas Howard’s faux apology for trying to hurt Rob on film by saying, “That’s ok, I ripped your head off … and now you’re pregnant!” Whoops! Cut to Kristen Stewart’s jaw dropping.

  1. That was absolutely the most humiliating experience of my life and it wasn’t even me. I watched the first 10-15 mins of the show and the moment he announced Bryce pregnancy I knew it was just the beginning of a big train wreck I love him but that was too much even for me. I ran out of the room like a lunatic If I were him i would have escaped in the first 10mins of the show. I still love him can’t even save the beautiful pictures cause I was/am traumatized.

  2. really , rob stole the show, without trying too hard, whats so hulmilating? If you follow Rob from the 1st interview for Twilight, he was always fearless in speaking his mind. He make the other actors lame.

  3. I loved the MTV movie awards Rob was soo funny he had me in stitches Love ya Rob

  4. Rob was the best of the night!! I love the kiss, I love that “I fuck you ” and “That’s ok, I ripped your head off … and now you’re pregnant!”. That way is Rob always. Fun and spontaneous. He’s natural. Rob saved a boring show with some “jokes” by Jason in very bad taste. The worst host I’ve seen.

  5. OMR!!!

  6. It wasn’t embarrassing just hilariously awkward. It’s Rob for goodness sake, he’s always doing something on stage that makes people shake their head and laugh all at the same time because clearly he’s being himself and not trying to put up a front which is what I love about him so much. He honestly took what could have been a boring show and just let loose and made it more fun to watch. I do have to say him kissing Taylor was the highlight of the award show cause I don’t think anyone saw it coming and the look on Taylor’s face was funny, almost like he didn’t expect it to come.

  7. Wait what? Bryce her pregnancy wasn’t announced before this??? I thought i was pretty obvious she’s pregnant.. I saw it the minute she appeared on the red carpet..

  8. The only thing that was embarrassing was forgetting that it was his turn to speak for Reese (which didn’t surprise me). That whole thing about “my teleprompter just says ‘Ad Lib'” was funny. Joking about her playing his mom then years later his lover is old so he added the f-bomb since this is the MTV Movie Awards and cursing is not looked down upon. Getting passed the censors is an achievement there. He actually outshined Chelsea Handler and that’s hard to do. Reese then returned the favor by correcting his joke and throwing the f-bomb back at him. No harm done.

Yeah, he’s awkward and giggly but he’s being himself and I love that. It makes me appreciate his acting skills more that he is not like Edward Cullen in real life.

    • Yes, I forgot about him being funnier and edgier than Chelsea. I thought, oh, this is like a roast! Ok, that’s cool. And Reese is such a champ.

  9. “He’s funny, in a totally not-trying-to-be-funny way, has an air of unpredictability that’s just dangerous enough to keep us on the edge of our seats”

The reporter nailed it. The MTV Awards is supposed to be wacky, irreverent, spontaneous and not safe. Remember, this is where we first saw Tom Cruise play Les Grossman, Sandra Bullock kiss Scarlett Jo, and Bruno straddle Eminem’s face.

I noticed the lack of planned gags by the producers. Rob provided them even though he didn’t mean to, and he carried the show. He’s the talk of the town and has gained some street cred and I was thinking that, with the positive feedback that Rob’s getting, it should give him confidence to get into his Master of the Universe role in Cosmopolis.

    Go, Rob!!

  10. Rob was great, and yeah he saved us of a boring night.

  11. dear Rob…you have to do SNL.u have this beautiful gift in making me smile, laugh and being happy. Please do not change and become one of these stuck up faces of Hollywood. your jokes are refreshing and you have some awesome dry humour

  12. It wasn’t the MTV Awards, it was the Rob Pattinson Show. Definitely kept me from snoozing off.
