Cosmopolis Interview with Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg by HeyYouGuys   1 comment

Here’s a great interview by Hey You Guys: There are some spoilers in the interview but they’re highlighted 😉

With the Twilight behemoth winding down, Robert Pattinson is an actor looking to shake off his teen idol persona and establish himself as a adult leading man. He’s taken the latest step on this road to rehabilitation by teaming up with Canadian body-horror legend David Cronenberg, taking the lead in his adaptation of Don Delillo’s dark sci-fi satire Cosmopolis.

Pattinson is superb as Eric Packer, an arrogant, narcissistic young billionaire who trundles through a dystopian future New York in search of a haircut, while the city, his life and his fortune all crumble around him. The film marks another step in the evolution of David Cronenberg’s career, building on the triumphs of his recent steps away from horror such as Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method, but also retaining a uniquely Cronenbergian world view. It’s also a very timely film, feature a financial crisis and protests in the streets that strongly echo the Occupy Wall Street movement.

We sat down with Davin Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson in London to talk to them about the film.

One of Cronenberg’s answer does include some spoilers for the film, but we’ve clearly highlighted it.

Paul Giamatti and Sarah Gadon talk about Robert Pattinson   1 comment

Paul Giamatti talks about Rob with c7nema (click to read the full interview – in Portuguese)

Did you know Robert before the movie?
No.

What do you think of him? He unintentionally became an icon after all the madness from ‘Twilight’?
He’s a great guy. Of course he has a crazy life, but he deals with it very well. I don’t know how he does that. I knew he had done ‘Twilight’, but I’ve never even watched it, I didn’t know how famous he was. All I can tell you is that he’s very nice and down-to-earth.

Actor Robert Pattinson has predicted that his new art-house film Cosmopolis will be embraced by Twilight fans.

“Some of them will just want you to play vampires, but most people don’t want you to repeat yourself,” the Briton told the BBC.

The heart-throb, who played Edward Cullen in the Twilight films, also defended his fans from accusations that their dedicated behaviour was “crazy”.

All these people come up and give what they’ve been reading and found interesting”

Robert Pattinson on his literary gifts from the red carpet

The film, based on the novel by Don DeLillo, was a contender for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The cast also includes Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti and Samantha Morton. Pattinson’s role as Wall Street billionaire Eric Packer is a far cry from his Twilight character.

The story begins with Packer setting out for a haircut in his stretch limousine. The car journey across Manhattan is punctuated by casual sex, abstract conversations and violent street protests.

At one point, Packer receives a prostate examination in the back of his limo and later gets a cream pie in the face from an anarchist.

“It’s nice to do a movie where there’s at least one scene you know is never going to be repeated,” said Pattinson.

Asked what his Twilight fanbase would make of the film, the 26-year-old star said: “I think a lot of them will really connect to it. Over the years, people kind of get an idea of what you’re trying to do.

“Some of them will follow – some of them will just want you to play vampires, but most people don’t want you to repeat yourself. So hopefully they’ll like it.”

Twilight fans, he suggested, had come in for unfair criticism.

“People put down Twilight fans, but yesterday I got given on the red carpet in Berlin all these books from people who are lined up in the rain and are probably judged by everyone to be crazy.

“I got a signed first edition of the Martin Amis book, Money; a Lawrence Ferlinghetti book; the new [Michel] Houellebecq book. All these people come up and give what they’ve been reading and found interesting. This is not giving you teddy bears!”

‘Really weird’

Cosmopolis was Pattinson’s first film after finishing work on the Twilight franchise.

Next up is Mission: Blacklist – a thriller about the true story of military interrogator Eric Maddox, who spearheaded the capture of Saddam Hussein.

Pattinson may also be reunited with Cronenberg on a planned project Maps to the Stars, which would see the Canadian director shoot for the first time in the US.

“It’s about child actors going crazy,” explained Pattinson. “The script is really funny and really weird, and captures the insanity of most actors.”

Cronenberg’s recent films include A Dangerous Method, Eastern Promises and A History of Violence.

He is closely associated with the “body horror” genre through his 1970s-80s films such as Rabid, Scanners, Videodrome and The Fly.

Robert Pattinson dissection
At 26, (with a full set of teeth!) this “Twilight” vampire comes back as a trader in “Cosmopolis” and as a right Casanova in “Bel ami”. (And of course, he melts our hearts!).
Brain: Sharp, he’s aware that his trade prefers younger actors and is already considering his other options for the future. “I want to write” says this Francophile film buff, he’s an avid reader. He feels a connection with Michel Houellebecq’s characters And Jean-Luc Godard’s films.
Eyes: laser blue eyes! He has this serial seducer stare that allows him to impersonate the trader in Cosmopolis as well as the ambitious cad in Bel Ami, since his debut in Harry Potter in 2005 the British press has nicknamed him the new Jude Law.
Heart: spoken for by Kristen, his Twilight co star. They have been cryptic for a while about the nature of their relationship, a clever way of protecting themselves while feeding the suspense.
Smile: Pale. “My dad pushed me to take acting lessons to give me confidence. I hated the stage but once I saw the many pretty girls there, I assiduously attended.”
Ears: Musical! Piano from the early age of 3 and the guitar from only 5! More recently an interest in the cello has flourished in him. “I am a one-man band” he says smiling “Music has always been my plan B”. He also composes: two of his songs have been used in “Twilight”.

Facial features: Chiselled. Almost feminine! “As a child, my sisters used to dress me up as a woman and nickname me ‘Claudia’”. This (stunning) face enabled him to be regarded as an excellent choice to incarnate Salvadore Dali in “little ashes” in 2009.
Skin: Translucent ! Just like his Twilight vampire, he must flee daylight to escape the teenage crowds that track him down. “I live indoors, otherwise chaos ensues, I ‘d never imagined that I would become an idol for tweens. Sometimes I ask myself how far my patience will stretch”.
Name: Pattinson. Revealed by “Twilight”, he was ranked in 2008 by Forbes magazine to be amongst the 50 most influential celebs on the planet. Forename: Robert. We prefer to call him ‘Rob’. He has two elder sisters: Lizzy (a singer in the group Aurora) and Victoria (who currently works in advertising). Date of birth: 13th May 1986, in London (where he still resides to this day). Father: A car salesman. Richard specialized in American vintage cars. “My father has always been an artist that could never summon up the courage to put himself out there”. Mother: Casting director. Thanks to ‘Mummy’ (Clare) Pattinson manages to obtain him a contract at the young age of 12. Diplomas: none. “From 13 to 16 I was very lazy; I only started doing my homework at 17, and that was far too late”. First job: Model. “When I started, the ‘androgynous’ look was very popular, and it seemed to work! As soon as puberty caught up with me though, my career fell apart.

David Cronenberg Talks About Rob With The Sunday Times   2 comments

On the many critics who have since taken chunks out of Cosmopolis for being alienating and cold, he scoffs, “Rob [Robert Pattinson] told me that he’d read a description of the film as ‘aggressively unloveable’! And I thought, ‘Well I rather like that!’ Because if you’re not making movies that are desperate to be loved — and I’m not — then you expose yourself to all kinds of attacks and criticism and misunderstandings.”
